It's a sales pitch

To state this upfront, the question "how to write great blog posts" is not being answered in this booklet, the author merely suggests ways "how to market your blog post" while marketing his own material to you, the reader.

"How to write great blog posts that engage the reader" is just one more book of the thousands which are written by the same scheme:

1) The reader can get a free gift. (Nothing in life is free)
2) The author points out that with this gift he is giving away "some of my most guarded secrets" (How can these secrets be guarded when by time you download this free gift, thousands of others have already received it. This is nothing but an attempt to get your email address, so you can be pestered with more sales pitches.)
3) The words "blogging is big business" and "ANYONE can do it" are being thrown around. That in itself is a ridiculous thought. Surely you remember at least half a dozen kids in your high school classes who could not write one great sounding sentence much less a blog.
4) The author tells that his own 570 blogs have generated 345,000+ visitors. 345,134 : 570 = 605 unique visitors to each blog. This number does not sound that impressive.

Eventually the author addresses his title question - very vaguely:

"All you have to do is to think what people want and then create a collection of information that fills the need."

Yeah, wouldn't we all?

Steve Scott`s booklet continues to list a ton of steps, pitches, suggestions for pitches, and other facts, but nothing you haven't heard before, or could find out from others experts. His writing is interrupted by links to his website, which strongly suggests that this might be one way how he gets "unique visitors" to his blog.

There is absolutely nothing revolutionary or new in this booklet. It is a massive attempt to get the reader to submit his email address at the author's (and presumably affiliates') websites, most likely to be used for sales pitches. I did not submit my own.

Practical guide to get results

This book is a quick read but full of good information. The author discusses the blog writing as a job with the goal of attracting business. He distinguishes between two main type of posts: MVP (Massive Value Posts) and FP (Filler Posts). The MVP is a post that the reader will really love because of the high information content but is also the post that will take a lot of time to compose. The FP is the post that is shorter but is also very valuable with information that the reader can apply immediately. The author then lays out 19 ideas on how to present a post: lists, how-to, story, etc..

The author recommends 10-20 hours of writing posts per WEEK using a structured approach of 2 MVP and 6 FP per month. He suggests to use a publishing schedule maintained in a spreadsheet to track the dates, subjects, type, audience, comments received etc.

The next chapter discusses elements of engaging blog posts and how to improve the quality. He also has recommendations on the layout of the post. He then wraps up the book with a summary, final thoughts and how to promote your posts.

Overall, I really liked his structured approach to writing blogs. I know it is not an SEO book but I was surprised to see that he does not even mention the importance of post titles. For an easy Wordpress SEO, I would recommend SEO for WordPress: How To Get Your Website on Page #1 of Google...Fast! (Read2Learn Guides) as a good addition.

This is NOT a saled pitch!.... Short informative read.

This is NOT a sales pitch! I mean- really? Did you even read the book? This book is short and sweet and to the point. Chock full of detailed information and steps, and plenty of resources. Excellent read. Thank you Steve Scott, this is my second book of yours I've read. Keep them coming.

Excellent

I am using this book for home school, as a backup to other science education that we cover. While not being equivalent to a "full course dinner" of science, this book to me is the equivalent of a "high quality daily multivitamin" of science, if that makes sense. It is very helpful and provides an easy way to learn and retain the information necessary for a broad overview of the subject, with a lot of specifics included. My son consistently scores very high on any science tests, and I will give this series credit for helping with that. We started with this book in grade 3 or 4, and have continued every year since we found it. My son also likes this book very much, and looks forward to the reading and exercises as a pleasant and enjoyable part of his school day. He likes this book (not so with everything). The stories and workbook questions are very interesting, and stimulate further thought. It's a great resource and supportive material for teaching science, in my opinion. I just hope that they make these books through 12th grade.

This is a great product to use for worksheets when teaching on different ...

This is a great product to use for worksheets when teaching on different topics. This of course, is not enough as a stand alone teaching product. I use the worksheets after we have gone over a subject that they have a corresponding worksheet for. There is also an answer key at the back of the book which is helpful. I homeschool and this is a good item to have in your curriculum.

I like the layout and the way they handle the subject matter the best for science. It's easy on the eyes and asks good questions based on the reading. The topics are interesting and informative. I always get Spectrum workbooks for science.

Bleed White is the story of Leeds United in the new Millennium. At the turn of the century a young vibrant team had ambitions to challenge the domination of Manchester United and Arsenal and by the 1st January 2002 they sat proudly at the top of the Premier League arguably the best league in Europe. But disaster was around the corner. Mismanagement both on and off the field saw the club fall into serious financial difficulty. Managers and players came and went and the club was relegated from the Premier League in May 2004. The downfall continued and they were relegated from the Championship in May 2007 and started in the third tier of British football for the first time in the club's history. The club had also been put into administration and to make matters worse they were forced to start the next season with a fifteen point penalty following a dispute with the Inland Revenue which caused them to break Football League rules. But the club is on the way back and after three long years in Division One, the future is looking much brighter. Ken Bates the Chairman has restored financial stability and Simon Grayson an excellent young manager who happens to be a fan and ex Leeds player has given the fans hope at last. This story is a fan's view of what happened at Leeds United Football Club during those eventful years. The book covers issues both on and off the pitch and has been written from two different perspectives - wearing a level headed business hat one minute and a passionate Leeds United baseball cap the next. Business objectivity meets football fan emotion and they hate each other.

He has a track record of building high performing teams and is an expert in change management and business transformation. Phil has spent a great deal of his career in trouble shooting roles and helping businesses improve performance, particularly through the organization and management of people. His more recent roles include merger and integration planning, the development and implementation of business strategies and overseeing major change programmes. Phil's passion is football. He has played and managed at amateur level and for the last fifteen years or so has been a season ticket holder at Elland Road. Born in Pudsey he is a life long Leeds fan and now lives in North Wales with his wife Sian, and daughters Gemma, Hannah and Kate.

Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs is a complete guide for amateur astronomers who are looking for a new challenge beyond astrophotography. The book provides a brief overview of the history and development of the spectroscope, then a short introduction to the theory of stellar spectra, including details on the necessary reference spectra required for instrument testing and spectral comparison. The various types of spectroscopes available to the amateur are then described. Later sections cover all aspects of setting up and using various types of commercially available and home-built spectroscopes, starting with basic transmission gratings and going through more complex models, all the way to the sophisticated Littrow design. The final part of the text is about practical spectroscope design and construction. This book uniquely brings together a collection of observing, analyzing, and processing hints and tips that will allow the amateur to build skills in preparing scientifically acceptable spectra data. It covers all aspects of designing, constructing, testing, calibrating, and using a spectroscope and enables the average amateur astronomer to successfully build and use a homemade spectroscope for a fraction of the current commercial cost. As Professor Chris Kitchin said, “If optical spectroscopy had not been invented then fully 75 percent of all astronomical knowledge would be unknown today, and yet the subject itself re-ceives scant attention in astronomical texts.” This book answers that need. About the Author
Ken Harrison was born in Scotland where he trained as a mechanical engineer. He has been designing and building telescopes since the early 1960's and has built a series of spectroscopes for use on medium sized amateur telescopes. He was Section Director of the Astronomical Society of Victoria, Australia, Astrophotographic Section for ten years and past President of the Society. Harrison's university thesis (and his first publication) was Design and Construction of the Isaac Newton 98-inch Telescope (Strathclyde University, 1970). Since then he has published many articles on optical design, including "Blink Comparison" (BAA Journal Vol87, p94) and "Method of Radially Supporting Large Mirrors" (Vol87, p154). He has made contributions to the Astronomical Society of Victoria Newsletter and was for three years the Editor of the 'N'Daba' newsletter of the Natal Centre, Astronomical Society of Southern Africa.

Well worth having waited for!

This book is a welcome addition to the discipline's literature. It fills a real need for both theoretical and practical "how-to" information for amateur astronomers.

The writing, organization, editing, layout, color graphics and images are all excellent and reflect the high production values of Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series (Springer) publications.

The book is divided into three sections:

Part One: Introduction to Spectroscopy - Covers the history and theory of the field, including a good discussion of the different types of spectroscopes. Even if you have read this kind of background on the field many times before, you'll find that Ken's presentation and his inclusion of new details makes it fresh and interesting reading.

Part Two: Obtaining and Analyzing Spectra - Discusses how to setup and images with converging beam as well as reflection grating spectroscopes. It also discusses different cameras including DSLRs. There's a chapter that describes how to use VSpec for image processing. This section finishes up with a good discussion of different amateur spectroscope observing projects.

Part Three: Design and Construction - Frankly, my initial response when I thumbed through this section was that it wasn't for me, since I don't plan to ever build my own spectroscope. But, now, having read it through, I think that this section will be appreciated by almost everyone. Yes, there were places that it was a bit more technical than I was interested in. But, the majority of the material I found engaging and very helpful in filling in gaps in my knowledge. Even if you never plan to build your own spectroscope, I think you'll find this section interesting and informative.

One complaint I have about this book is that I frequently found parts that whet my appetite but then, instead of going into more detail, the author moved on to a different topic. This book could have been a lot longer! It's unfortunate that Ken was constrained by the publisher's page count and layout. However, that's one of the realities of book publishing these days. Clearly Ken has a lot more he can write about. Hopefully we'll see additional publications from him in the years to come.

You'll find spectra and images in the book from many of the "usual suspects" in the amateur astronomical community: Hansen, Leadbeater, Buil, Majden, Shelyak, Gavin, etc. Their images are a valuable addition to book, making it more accessible and informative. Thank you all of you for making your work available.

Ken is an active leader in the amateur astronomical spectroscopy community. He's also the designer of the the increasingly popular Spectra-L200 spectroscope kit. And he is also an active participant in several on-line communities, including the RSpec real-time spectroscopy forum where he regularly coaches both newcomers and more experienced users. Over the years, his postings and his direct emails have helped many of us deepen our understanding and overcome obstacles we encountered. This book is a further expression of his passion for spectroscopy and his desire to see more involvement in it by amateur astronomers.

Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned expert, I think you'll enjoy and find "Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs" has a lot of valuable information.

I expect that this book will become a well-respected and enduring classic that appears on many of our bookshelves.

Exemplarily Good Source of Spectroscopy Information

This "source" is very complete, easy to understand, and well laid out for the amateur astronomer. Each section deals with different parts of what a beginning or advanced amateur astronomer needs to be aware of when learning about and building the different types of equipment used to see and record the light spectrum being imitated from stars - our own star (sun) included.

Excellent overview of Spectroscopy

This is an excellent introduction to amateur spectroscopy. It provides a great overview of the different types of spectrographs and how to use them on astronomical objects. Highly recommended.
