From hairy hominids, rational, self-aware human beings sprang into existence within a mere two million years--an eye-blink in geological terms. McCrone believes it was language that triggered the quantum leap in human development, allowing Homo sapiens to arise in the midst of an inhospitable ice age and sweep across the earth. McCrone re-creates the way our Homo ancestors' use of language might have made possible an inner dialogue dependent on the controlled recall of memories--a skill essential to self-awareness. The British science writer's controversial conclusion is that "the human mind is only a few degrees different from an animal's." Imagination, higher emotions and complex habits of thought, in his theory, are language-driven extensions of the animal mind. Imparting a shock of discovery, this exciting evolutionary odyssey seamlessly interweaves recent advances in linguistics, brain research, cognitive psychology and anthropology. Illustrations. Enjoyable, lucid survey with misleading oversimplifications

Even 12 years after it was published, McCrone's first book remains a lucid introduction to the workings of the human brain, the history of its evolution, and the role of language in the development of self-consciousness and intelligence. He discusses how the brain evolved over millions of years, then he narrows his focus to examine how, during the last 40,000 years, language and self-awareness enhanced the brain's capabilities (through a process he calls "cultural evolution"). With its lack of jargon, "The Ape That Spoke" could be read by non-scientists interested in pursuing the far more exhaustive (and perhaps intimidating) studies by the likes of Steven Pinker or Antonio R. Damasio.
The reader should be aware, however, that McCrone's survey is occasionally reductive or misleading. Its most noticeable shortcoming, as the author himself admits on his own Web site, is that the book is "pretty sketchy on the neurological underpinnings of consciousness." (His later books attempt to address this disparity.) Second, readers must be very attentive to the endnotes in order to differentiate between scientific findings and McCrone's frequent speculation. Third, the book often presents tentative scientific conclusions as established fact and skirts the heated debates among scientists regarding language, consciousness, and intelligence. (His neglect of neurological studies only exacerbates this weakness.)
Finally, and perhaps most important, McCrone repeatedly uses the concept of "evolution" when he means "progress," "change," or "development." (Two examples selected from dozens: "Language gave early man just such a way to evolve and pass on complex ideas." "But now technology is starting to open the door to rapid mental evolution.") Even McCrone acknowledges that such oversimplification is not always useful when talking about something as complex as evolution, "where an effect can be its own cause and . . . where stable patterns emerge as what works outlasts what does not." Yet he nevertheless persists in using "evolution" in its metaphorical sense. Such vagueness may be appropriate for some topics, but it is certainly confusing in a book on evolution and language. In particular, as Stephen Jay Gould notes in "Full House," the term "cultural evolution" should be abandoned altogether, since societal transformation, unlike evolutionary change, can occur--and regress--both rapidly and deterministically (e.g., humans can easily and radically influence the direction of their culture and still remain human, but they cannot alter the genetic makeup they collectively inherited from evolutionary processes!).
Keeping in mind these caveats and shortcomings, diligent readers might still find McCrone's survey a useful introduction to more accurate and complex works on the topic.

This book makes anthropology more gripping than fiction

I picked up my copy of "The Ape That Spoke" in the overstock bins at my local bookstore, so who could have imagined that it would be one of the most engaging books I had ever picked up? Like the PBS series "Connections", the author weaves disparate threads of topics into an easily understood foundation for social fabric. "The Ape That Spoke" reveals current theories about why intelligence was a successful factor in human evolution. It relates the power of speech with self expression then with social interaction. The ability to formulate complex expression is then shown in the contexts of prehistoric man as well as modern life. The viability of these theories is backed by a description of the data from experimentation. This helps ground the theories so that it is easy to follow the conclusions made by the anthropologists whose work is represented by the book's author. I'd encourage the reading of this book for anyone with a curiosity about the workings of the mind, and further would suggest it as a required reading for a college philosophy course.

I read this book for a book review I had to do for my "Mind Brain and Behavior" class in college. It was a very simple book to read and understand. I dont neccessarily agree with all McCrone has to say, but he does do an excellent job at making his ideas clear to the reader. I also enjoyed the fact that he had stories, etc. to help the average reader understand it more.

Aly Bain's Eclectic Tune Collection

This collection spans a wide variety of Celtic styles, including Shetland Islands tunes. Several tunes in flat keys are presented, along with several hornpipes, jigs, polkas, reels and a few strathspeys. Interesting biographical information is also presented on some of the greats of Scotttish violin, including James Scott Skinner and the Gows. My copy was used, and unfortunately the CD did not come with it. I recommend getting a copy with the recording since the best way to get the feel of these tunes is to hear them played by a great musician like Aly Bain.

great idea, mediocre execution

This book came to being from a very good idea. The editors decided to go around and ask renown programmers and designers about snippets of code, software architecture, design or anything related they found beautiful and see as an example of good design.

Indeed, the idea is terrific. After all, besides books describing specific technologies we read on a per-need basis, what books do programmers have to read for inspiration ? Consider artists and architects, for example. They have peer art and work to study and be inspired by. Sure, code reading is highly recommended, but wouldn't it be great if someone had already collected all the good bits ? Wouldn't it be sweet for Brian Kernighan and Yuhikiro Matsumoto to tell you what they've found beautiful ?

Unfortunately, this books doesn't fulfill the high expectations I had from it. It's not bad, no, but it isn't as good as I hoped it to be. There are two main reasons for this:

1. Many of the authors forgot that they're writing for a paper book, and not an online article / blog entry. When reading a paper book, you can't just click on links to find out more information. Therefore, I'd expect many chapters to be more complete. The authors could have spent a few extra lines to explain a concept instead of referencing it to some online resource or (worse) a paid-subscription-access paper at ACM. This is a paper book - I want to read it on the bus to work. Had I wanted to read an online article jumping around links, I would just do that.
2. A few of the chapters in the book are just way too specific. How many people would understand a chapter about LINPAK - a Fortran library for linear algebra manipulation, especially when the author is very parsimonious in explaining the concepts and sends you to linear algebra tomes instead (see complaint #1).

In general, I think that to better execute the idea of such a book, a panel of experts has to be assembled and scrutinize each and every article. I would be much happier to read a book of 10 great articles than a book of 33, of which 10 are great. Who said that each and every programming book should be more than 600 pages long ?

However, I want to finish on a positive note, since as I stated in the beginning, the book is not bad. Here's a list of articles I found really good and interesting. I guess that just for them it was worth to read:

6. Chapter 16, The Linux Kernel Driver Model: The Benefits of Working Together, by Greg Kroah-Hartman
7. Chapter 18, Python's Dictionary Implementation: Being All Things to All People, by Andrew Kuchling
8. Chapter 23, Distributed Programming with MapReduce, by Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat
9. Chapter 28, Beautiful Debugging, by Andreas Zeller
10. Chapter 33, Writing Programs for "The Book," by Brian Hayes

It's beautiful, see ? SEE ???

The idea of this book is that thirty software developers and/or researchers (respectable ones, no doubt there), had to find the most beautiful piece of code and present its study. Each of them then writes a chapter and there you have it - a volume of "beautiful code" ! Simple as that.

If there was somebody to fully support the idea of such book, it would be me - I believe that the software industry already spent too much time and effort neglecting the art-and-craft in programming, pretending that it all can be reduced to hard math. Didn't work so far, did it ? Then I very welcome books like this one. But not exactly the one.

Let me put it this way - I couldn't say anything good about this book except that I adore the concept and found may be ten of thirty three chapters interesting (not necessarily beautiful). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say, but this lame excuse is the last good thing I could say for this book.

It was supposed to be pedagogical. Did not happen. Rather than making it timeless reference for the readers, the book made a tribune for the authors to talk about, uhm, just about anything. We know how programmers love to talk about what they do, and it's ok. But we also know that they often mumble instead of talking and it's very difficult for us to understand one another, no matter friendly or hostile. This is not to mention that there are no commonality in topics or style or language (programming or English) or anything. The editor had simply glued it together.

Not so bad you say, a good assortment is fine you say ? Let me tell you more, and it's all downhill.

It's as though you expected an album of paintings but instead got a book of random excerpts from chemical specifications for producing paints.

Exemplary conventional antimicrobial, antimildew, or antialgae agent includes 3-iodo-2-propynyl butylcarbamate, diiodomethyl-p-tolylsulfone, 1,2-benzoisothiazolin-3-one, 2-methylthio-4-tert-butylamino-6-cyclopropylamino-s-triazine, 2-(4-thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole and the mixtures thereof.

See how beautiful it is that can be painted with that ?

If you ask me, a book like this ought to have structure. Remember the classic one by Gamma et al - they also presented abstract things from different areas or levels, but they kept the information stylistically uniform and structured against a clear taxonomy. Not the case here.

Each chapter is about different matter, presented in a different way. One author presents a performance hack in which he compiles code on the fly. The chapter will then contain several pages of dynamic assembly. The other will show an interesting approach to syntax parsing. This one will have 50 short snippets of something JavaScript-like. Yet another will tell you how to automate debugging by automatically mutating the application. This one won't have code at all. Yet another will show a slick algorithm for counting bits in a word. This one will have a lot of bitwise arithmetic.

And I just loved the one that has NASA in it's title. There - "A Highly Reliable Enterprise System For NASA's Mars Rover Mission". Wow ! How promising ! Want to know what it says ? It says - "In NASA they love their software reliable, even a web-based file server, and so we present you a web-based file server built with JavaBeans in three-tier architecture". Ahem, Mars Rover anyone ?

Don't get me wrong, some of the chapters are reasonably interesting. Interesting ! Not beautiful !

With a little exception, the authors don't even mention the word "beautiful" in their texts. They allure with "There, we have this system, it works like this..." . What exactly the author finds beatiful about it and why - remains secret.

The most impressive standout was the chapter written by Yukihiro Matsumoto, the creator of Ruby. Three pages in which he simply speaks about what he believes a beautiful code is. He explains to you his understanding of a beautiful code. This is what the book is all about !

Instead, many chapters just demonstrate a few pages (!) of code and conclude - it is beautiful, see !

Many times I wasn't unable to grasp the problem - what was it that required that so called beauty to emerge ? I couldn't see the whole picture, but the authors sort of presume I do and so my possible appreciation of beauty requires deep understanding. What if I show you a magnified fragment of Mona Lisa's background, some 3x3 blackish pixels ? No doubt, Leonardo had to paint them too. But what was that beauty again ?

Only a few authors were wise enough to use a pseudocode. Something that anyone can read, no matter from which camp. Otherwise it's just weird when the authors present their beatiful code in Ruby or Perl or LISP. Look, I didn't touch Ruby yet, I hate Perl and I can't imagine using LISP in practice. Nevertheless the authors repeatedly say something like "It's easy, I'll show you, this bracket does this and that character does something else. Now you see how beautiful it is ?". They literally show you a piece of poetry in foreign language and ask you to appreciate it.

A classical example of awful poetry in Russian is (transliterated)

Ya poet, zovus' Neznajka,
ot menya vam balalajka.

Can you tell whether it's good or bad and why ? What if I told you it's beatiful ? Would you believe ? Does it appeal to your sense of beauty ? Same thing about this entire book.

Awful implementation of an idea that I fully adore. In fact, implementations like this undermine the idea, that's why I rate this book so low and put it away with disgust.

Beautiful Code

I am always looking to for new ways to look at programming problems. I love studying new programming languages in order to bend my mind in new, uncomfortable ways. Both of these are reasons I enjoyed Beautiful Code.

Beautiful Code is a collection of essays from some well known software engineers. That said, I didn't immediately recognize many of their names (this is probably an indication of my lack of exposure in their fields of expertise). If you are like me, there is an alphabetical list of short biographical entries in the back of the book you can use to acquaint yourself with who wrote each chapter.

There are chapters from people in the Perl, Python, Ruby, Google, Scheme, and Haskell communities (among others).

I especially enjoyed reading about Google's MapReduce algorithm, Haskell's Software Transactional Memory, and Scheme's syntax-case macro system. These are subjects I have previously tried to tackle, but the explanations written in this book have helped me approach understanding far better than the academic papers on these subjects I have tried to read.

You'll have to put forth effort to follow the explanations in the chapters as the authors walk you through how they tackle a given problem. This leads eventually to the solution, but may involve many twists and turns along the way. These twists and turns show how the authors think and grants us as the readers insight into how they approach the problems at hand. It's the journey to the desination that sometimes matters more than the destination.

For example, I've long wondered abut the difference between hygenic and non-hygenic macros. Various descriptions on the web have given me some clue, but chapter 25 shows examples and explains the problem very clearly. It then goes about discussing various solutions that have been devised over the years before going into the details of the current solution that is in use today. I've seen the end result before, but knowing what motivated the solution gives me a much greater appreciation for and understanding of it.

The effort required for some chapters may be over your head as they are for me, but those are the chapters where I find the rewards to be the greatest as they force me to look at things in new ways. Once I do achieve understanding I'm able to apply the new found ways of thinking about problems to the situations I face at work and elsewhere which has led to unique and compelling solutions that I would not have thought of before.

I've long been on the search for beauty in the code I write. I have found that as I read and take the time to understand what others see as beautiful, even when I do not see beauty in it at first, I gain greater insights into my craft. I am glad that O'Reilly has taken the time to solicit responses from the authors in this book as it has given us a wealth of experience and expertise that we all can benefit from as we seek to gain greater insights into the various facets of beauty and elegance in code.

About the Author
William Menzies is widely known in Pentecostal and Evangelical circles as a statesman, building bridges across denominational and racial divides. He was one of the organizers of the Society for Pentecostal Studies and was the first editor of the society s journal, Pneuma. He was also one of the editors for the Full Life Study Bible and a consulting editor for Christianity Today. He held teaching and administrative positions at Central Bible College (Springfield, Missouri), Evangel University (Springfield, Missouri), the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (Springfield, Missouri), California Theological Seminary (Fresno, California), and Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (Baguio City, Philippines). Menzies s dissertation at the University of Iowa became the benchmark history of the Assemblies of God, Anointed to Serve (GPH, 1971). He was a prolific author, authoring or editing standard textbooks such as Understanding the Times of Christ (GPH, 1969), Bible Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective (GPH, 1993), and Spirit and Power (Zondervan, 2000).

Bible Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective

Biblbe Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective, explores theological issues using the 16 Fundamentals Truth of the Assemblies of God as a starting place. I enjoyed the clarity in which doctrines such as Christology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology, and so forth were explained. From reading this text, I've gained a clearer understanding of Assemblies of God teaching, and of Pentecostal doctrine in general.

Needed this one for class

Very good overview of what the Assemblies of God denomination believes. We needed this one for a certification class and it's a 'keep on the shelf' item for us now. I'm looking forward to re-reading it for enjoyment instead of primarily as a study guide for class.

About the Author
Simha R. Magal, Ph.D. is Professor of Management (MIS) and Director, ERP initiative, in the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Michigan. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. His primary research interests include e-business and enterprise systems. His articles have appeared in such publications as MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, and Information and Management, among others. He is Editor of AISWorld Net aisworld.org and has served on the editorial boards of several journals. He served as co-chair of the inaugural conference of the Midwest Association for Information Systems (MWAIS) in 2006 and as the president of MWAIS during 2008-2009. Jeffrey Word, Ph.D., is vice president of product strategy at SAP AG. He is responsible for defining SAP's future product strategy and for fostering product innovation within SAP. Dr. Word has worked for several Global 1000 companies in the high-tech industry for nearly 20 years, specializing in business and IT strategy. At SAP, he has driven the evolution of the company's enterprise technology strategy, with a special focus on corporate process improvement initiatives and services-based IT architecture design. Dr. Word earned his Ph.D. in information systems at Manchester Business School in England.

A truly in-depth functional overview of all aspects of SAP ERP

After reading this book I feel like I can call myself an SAP functional expert now! Before reading the book, I had a good functional understanding of parts of SAP ERP and some technical knowledge of SAP ERP and had read many books on SAP ERP; however, after reading this book, I feel like only now do I truly have the most comprehensive functional overview of SAP ERP. I may not be able to configure an SAP ERP system; but I have a really good understanding of what goes into an SAP configuration and how my business might map to an SAP implementation.

The book is based on the TERP-10 course that the SAP Training team offers; but while TERP10 requires the attendees to spend 3-5 intense days getting in class or online; this book allows busy professionals to get a similar (albeit, not as deep) overview at their own pace, on their own favorite e-Reader devices (Kindle, iPad, Surface, etc.), at their own favorite location (beach, kitchen, etc.)!

The book looks deceptively small -- but once you start getting into it, it gets very intense very quickly. A sample manufacturing company -- Global Bike, Inc. -- is taken throughout the book and all business processes in that company are clearly described. These business processes are implemented in SAP ERP and the book gives a very good description of how this business maps to SAP. The illustrations throughout the book are very helpful as are the video demonstrations. The video demonstrations showing the SAP transactions complement the text and the graphics very well and solidify the understanding of the business process.

One suggestion to the authors to take this book and its content to the next level would be to make an SAP ERP system available on the cloud with all the configuration and master data. Users of this system will be allowed to complete exercises, such as to complete the entire procure-to-pay process (create a PO, receive good, receive invoice, and pay the vendor), on this system. The practical understanding of SAP ERP that came from such a demo environment would be immense and I'm sure that the readers of this book will be willing to pay extra for access to such a system.

Great Core SAP Book

This book is excellent as a core book for SAP. I deducted one star simply since I believe the description of this book should have told us up front that this book is a slight different version of "Integrated Business Processes with SAP Systems", published by Wiley. Otherwise, this book would have been a 5-star book with brief introduction to some of the basic business processes rendered by SAP system. in a clear and insightful way. It is a very good introductory book for anybody who wants to learn and understand some of the basics about business processes of SAP ERP

A valuable reference book for my pos-graduation course

The book content is the backbone of the 18 months posgraduation course in SAP business process offered by ULT. It helped me to understand the main concepts of business process in general. It would be impossible to reach the results obtained without this fantastic book of Word and Magal.
