Well written

It has the basic diagrams and equations
and has problem sets.
The relationship of crystal structures
to energy and conduction can be better understood from reading this book.
That it is a classic introductory text is clear.

Better than Kittel's Solid State Physics book by far

In my year long undergraduate introductory solid state physics sequence, we used Kittel and my professor also recommended Ashcroft and Mermin. I felt Kittel's book was extremely unhelpful and covered a lot of material but was very skimpy on the details, even for an introductory course. On the other hand, Ashcroft and Mermin was far too advanced for an introductory class.
I'm a graduate student now and was recommended this book for a graduate level survey of materials science class. Without going too much into the mathematics, this book explains solid state physics concepts qualitatively very well. It is a great balance between Kittel and Ashcroft/Mermin and is good for people without much prior knowledge in solid state physics. After going through this book, I hope to move onto more advanced texts like Ashcroft/Mermin.

introductory solid state physics

The book by Blakemore is of great value for introductory solid state physics. Unfortunately it is not updated to include recent advances such as quantum dots, Bose-einstein condensation etc. A chapter on these latest developments would be very helpful for students working in these areas or starting in these fields.
