About the Author

Rebecca Donatelle is a professor emeritus in Public Health and was the Coordinator of the Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She has a PhD in Community Health/Health Education, a Master of Science degree in Health Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in both Health/Physical Education and English. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. In addition to her varied teaching responsibilities, Becky has been an active researcher in the area of health behaviors and behavior change. She received the Leadership Award, outstanding teacher award in her college, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidential Award for Promising New Research in the Smoke-Free Families National Initiative.

Nostalgia and the true horrors of adolescence

Being new to Brian Keene's books, I was recommended Ghoul by my mother who is an avid horror reader as being a "MUST READ". Usually she's right but man was did this book take me by surprise. It's one part Stand by Me, one part IT, mixed in with a fully fleshed out story that feels authentic and visceral. The contrast from childhood innocence and true horrors (those both human and other alike) truly make this book worth investing in. The characters are believable and genuine, and the "monsters" things made from nightmares. I won't give anything away, but I must say that this was a well worth read and I can't wait to see what other treasures Mr. Keene has in his collection.

S C A R E Y ! ! !

Read it in a well lit room if you want to NOT dream about monsters. Aside from Keene's creative genius, this isn't your parents monster under the bed story. It's brutal, violent, and disturbing.

Better than Kittel's Solid State Physics book by far

In my year long undergraduate introductory solid state physics sequence, we used Kittel and my professor also recommended Ashcroft and Mermin. I felt Kittel's book was extremely unhelpful and covered a lot of material but was very skimpy on the details, even for an introductory course. On the other hand, Ashcroft and Mermin was far too advanced for an introductory class.

I'm a graduate student now and was recommended this book for a graduate level survey of materials science class. Without going too much into the mathematics, this book explains solid state physics concepts qualitatively very well. It is a great balance between Kittel and Ashcroft/Mermin and is good for people without much prior knowledge in solid state physics. After going through this book, I hope to move onto more advanced texts like Ashcroft/Mermin.

Unfortunately it is not updated to include recent advances such as quantum dots, Bose-einstein condensation etc. A chapter on these latest developments would be very helpful for students working in these areas or starting in these fields.

Excellent enhancement to the first edition

I've found the first edition of the book to be quite useful for teaching radiology residents and studying for board exams. One of the best features of the book is that it is emminently readable and relatively uncluttered with jargon. The second edition expands on the first with additional material in each chapter, and considerably more pictures that are illustrative, rather than just eye candy. Concepts in radiation protection are further illustrated and reinforced by case studies. Any one in the radiological field would do well to have this text as part of their bookshelf. Those with the first edition, I recommend upgrading to the second edition.

excellant book for teaching new and old radiographers

This book was intrumental to my development in radiography. It was very informative and realy opens your eyes to the importance of ALARA. I had the pleasure of being instructed by the Author, Edwin Tilson. He guided me into and through my education process. Anyone could greatly bennefit from this book. It realy breaks down the steps that should become rote for the radiographer to protect them selves and their patients. It also gives great statistics of the effects of adhering to policy.
