About the Author
Dr. Kaveh Farrokh was born in Athens, Greece, in 1962 and emigrated to Canada in 1983. Kaveh has collected data and primary sources on Sassanian cavalry for 18 years resulting in travels to locations such as Naghshe-Rustam (Iran). He has given lectures and seminars in the University of British Columbia and the Knowledge Network Television Program of British Columbia and has written articles for various journals. Kaveh obtained his PhD in 2001 from the University of British Columbia where he specialized in the acquisition of Persian languages. He is currently a learning and career specialist in Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He acted as a historical advisor on the film Cyrus the Great, and has appeared on the History Channel documentary as an expert on the Persian Empire.

Unfortunately riddled with errors

What could (and should) have been a good book is unfortunately plagued by numerous errors and muddled narrative. For example, on page 25 Dr Farrokh writes that "For five centuries the Kurdistan region, like Armenia, was caught between the warring Safavid and Ottoman empires. . . ". The Safavid dynasty did not last for five centuries, it lasted little over two. On page 49 he discusses the reign of Mohammad Khodabandeh and gives the date of his reign as 1578-87. Turn the page and he gives the date for Prince Hamza's counter-attack against the Ottoman invasion in Shirvan and Karabakh as "1879"... Further down on page 50 he states that the Ottomans seized Tabriz but stayed only for 40 days as they were forced to withdraw "due to bitter resistence. . . and most likely by the shortage of supplies". But on the very next paragraph he opens it with the line "Not all of the Ottomans had withdrawn from Tabriz" and goes on to narrate how they were actually still in possession of the Tabriz citadel.
Moving onto the next page (p.51) he starts Chapter 5, 'Shah Abbas the Great', who, he writes on the first sentence, lived from 1571-1629. Howverer, on the second paragraph he writes, "When a new Uzbek invasion again thrust into Khorasan in 1787, Morshed Qoli Khan marched with 16-year old Abbas. . . ". 1787? Abbas was 16-years old in "1787" when he was said to have died in 1629? And so the sloppy mistakes go on, and on, and on...
I appreciate Dr Farrokh's enthusiasm for writing Iranian history from the perspective of Iranians themselves in such a way that should be appealing to all readers, casual and specialist alike, but numerous factual and syntax errors and sometimes muddled prose sadly overshadow the book. Whether that is Dr Farrokh's fault or that of his publisher's i have no idea. But i hope that a revised edition of the book correcting all of these unnecessary mistakes is released ASAP so as to do justice to Dr Farrokh's obvious passion for Iranian history.

Good read

Kaveh Darrokh is a well-known scholar of Ancient Iranian history. He is very opinionated, self-satisfied, and confident in his opinions and he likes nothing better than to dismiss other unfavourable-Persian works (by other historians) as being wrong. Normally that last wouldn't bother me. Not everyone will have problems with this. It encourages you to take your time so if you enjoy really savoring a book then you might prefer it this way. Farrokh is neither an expert in this field nor the Islamic studies. I think he likes it that way since he's written this book in a field he isn't an expert in. Personally, I think he feels he has something to prove but whatever it is he does research the periods he writes about well. Along the same line he also has a tendency to include comparisons to somewhat obscure historical figures that many of his readers will not recognize. Now onto the book. First off this is not a really well-written book. I know that you can see that by just looking at the page numbers on this site but you don't always appreciate that till you see. Now I'm not intimidated by a book's size but this one can be a chore.
The work is divided into six parts. Part 1 traces the reign of Safavids through the Crisis of the 16th century to the rise of Shia branch of Islam and the Afghan invasion. In many ways the reign of Ismail was the decline of Iran left by Mongol-Timur constant invasion, but the generations that followed witnessed a painful transformative process. Part II begins with Nader Shah's attempts to rebuild from the rubble, reorganizing Iran and its military into a new entity. It ends with the political split of the Iran between East and West and how Russia and Britian began to shape the inerteral affairs of Iran. Then last four parts then details the sordid legacy of Karim Khan and his successors,the rise of the Qajar invaders, Pahlavi-era and Iran-Iran war.
The book is often sketchy about details, not particularly well cited, but most of all because the narrative suffers from failing to introduce new characters properly, each successive official, soldier, or chief is just dropped in and sort of left hanging. On several occasions I found myself going back two or ten pages, or even consulting the index to figure out who this person was, and possibly the worst set of maps I have ever seen in classics book. These of course are minor problems, and it is a great read. just not 5 stars.

must read book

The book title initially misled me; in today's environment the title should have read "Iran on the defense, protecting an empire"
I have followed Kaveh Farrokh for years closely on his website. Listened to his speeches and read his blog.
The book flows well though at times I had to re read parts to better understand
The style seems to fit the narrative of the book
What I loved about the book is the historical accuracy coupled with facts; this is definitely not fiction
The book does a good job in correcting a lot of misunderstanding even for Persian speakers who are supposed to have been familiar with their own historical facts
Once I picked this book up to read I could hardly set it back down.
Reading this book was a pleasure while painful to read the lost battles.
I think the book has accomplished a major goal; that is verify, teach, and bring together much of the history in a concise well written book
