Great conversation piece, but....

I bought this for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and also so we would have an awesome conversation piece sitting on our coffee table when company comes over. All in all this book is amazing. It's better than I thought it would be. It's huge! And there's hundreds upon hundreds of erotic vintage photos in black and white. The black and white aspect gives it a somewhat classy feel as opposed to any other book of this type I have seen. I will say however the book is somewhat useless without the 3D glasses they provide. Since they only give you one pair, you can only look at it one at a time. After about 5 minutes, however, the glasses start giving you a massive headache; Every one of my friends, my boyfriend, and myself had the same complaint. If you want this as a novelty conversation piece it's great, but don't expect to sit there for hours ogling the pictures unless you want to deal with a super headache.

The Book is huge, and 3d is amazing

I bought this after reading the ad in playboy. It is a huge book, and very heavy. There are lots of pics, and the 3d is mind-blowing without a doubt. Some pics absolutely feel like you are in the same room. One kneeling girl with a huge rack appears to be ready for service, and all of the models have heavy hangers. The only things that leave a little to be desired are the fact that all of the pics are black and white. I'm not sure if they have to be to pull off the 3d, but most appear to be 60's stock photos, and/or recreations designed to look like 60's stock photos. Many of the models have repeat pics, and several are "unknown". The other downside is the fact that only a couple of the pics show complete nudity. A couple of bush shots in the lot. If it were full nudity, it would be much better. That said, if you were to take this to a bar, or party, it would be a massive hit with friends, and conversation piece no doubt. I hope they make a more modern version of this same idea.

A fine update to a classic

Technology is always advancing. The world of climbing consisted of "crag men" and "alpinists" when I started. To say that we're a long way away from soft iron pins and hauser-laid nylon ropes is an understatement.

Today's tools to protect a climber are better engineered, startlingly lighter, and more versatile than five year old kit! Making safe and efficient use of today's tools involves a much steeper learning curve than at any previous time (that's why this book is on its third edition!).

Safe climbers will learn the ropes from other, more experienced, climbers - but, as so many of today's "sport climbers" began climbing indoors with well engineered safety systems and artificial holds - not everybody will have had the advantage of a mentor teaching them the mechanics of building bomb proof anchors. That's where this book and Craig Luebben's Rock Climbing Anchors become invaluable, required, additions to every climber's library.

This new edition is, as expected, up to date, including sections dealing with the uses and drawbacks of Aramid "tech cord" as well as nylon and dyneena/spectra ropes and slings. A detailed look at old bolts and bolt hangers is unique to this book and extremely timely material. Many 1/4" bolts and their hangers are found on standard routes and most, if not all, are traps for the unwary.

The use and placement of (at least) three pieces of bomber protection to craft Serene / Ernest belay anchors employing the cordelette or Web-O-Let equalization system is the heart of this book. How placements respond to loading direction, avoiding force multiplication by keeping load angles optimal, dealing with shifting loading, and stressing that no leader should ever fall directly onto the belay anchor are central chapters.

The bolt and pin (piton) chapters are not guides to the deployment of those tools - the scope of this book is limited in the sense that it does not teach a climber how and where to place a bolt - it teaches how to recognize and use safe bolts and gives a brief bit about the types of fixed pins one might encounter and how to deal with them (as for learning to use pins, the authors suggest an aspiring iron-monger take a rack of pins to an old crag and practice bashing in as many pins in as many places as possible - a fair enough bit of advice).

If you climb anywhere outside of a gym, you need this book and you need Luebben's book. Aside from what you can learn away from your nearest vertical playground, these two books will serve you well in bringing enough knowledge to the field that you will not be ignorant of what other climbers are doing right, and, especially, what they are doing wrong.

An indispensable reference guide and wakeup call

Having read the previous two editions and then given them to friends (sorry John, they never returned them!), I'm pleased to see the third edition has been updated with new gear and anecdotes, while continuing to be a great reference guide for climbing efficiently and safely.

Most importantly, Long strengthens the case for letting go of the idea that the cordelette is good for general purpose anchor-rigging, reinforcing that it should only be used in limited circumstances (specifically, only when the arms of the cordelette are the same length). He also clearly explains how to minimize loading on anchors, and how to tie in to anchors safely. This s*** is more than theoretical armchair advice...it will save your life one day, and you are better off learning the right way to do things early on, rather than after you've burned in a lot of bad behavior.

Climbing Anchors jumps right in to the subject matter and presupposes some basic rock climbing knowledge and vocabulary. This is an ideal book for intermediate climbers starting to lead multi-pitch routes, where you have to build an anchor instead of clipping a couple of bolts, although there is a lot of information on safely rigging and clipping bolted anchors and fixed protection as well. You'll learn a lot about equalizing load on pieces and building anchors that anticipate loading from multiple directions. Long will relentlessly drum into your head the importance of placing protection (the "Jesus Nut") ASAP after starting a pitch to protect you from falling directly on the anchor...because you only get one chance to get this right.

You will be surprised at how many assumptions you've made about redundancy and equalization that are likely mistaken...and you'll probably look back at some near misses (we've all had them) and realize how lucky you are that you didn't take a dirt nap. I can pretty much guarantee you will never clip into an anchor with a daisy chain again!

Climbing is serious fun, but the serious part shouldn't be overlooked, as the consequences are just too high. Bad anchoring techniques only need to fail once for you to be an example in the AAC's "Accidents" annals. You'll have a lot more fun when your confidence in your anchors is not misplaced!

Long's style is light and droll, with a smattering of humorous anecdotes. The book provides many full-page images and illustrations of anchor placements, along with many beautiful shots of classic routes that relate back to the subject matter.

Bottom Line: You will climb safer and enjoy more confidence on multipitch routes after reading this book.

Long and Gaines recommended v. Luebben

I had read the Craig Luebben anchors book, but found it disorganized and vague at times. I have read the first 30pgs of Long and Gaines book and so far it is far superior to Luebben's text. Long and Gaines make clearly defined points which they support with physics, statistics and experience. Hand-waving scientific explanations are not proposed as fact. This text is clear and well reasoned, and therefore recommended over the Luebben text. (Admittedly I am only 1/6 through the text. Will update post upon further reading)

Love it.... 100%!!!! The best one so far....

Oh my this book was awesome. I like Bill, but this book made me look at Eric a whole new way. I already can't wait to read the next installment. Sookie really just wants to be "normal". She seems real tired of all the drama that is within her life. She fines out that Bill is going to Peru to do more research for his vampire catalog, and while driving home from work she find Eric running through the woods "lost". She stops to help me and realizes that he has no memory of anything. Pam and Chow find Sookie and Eric and they decide that Eric will stay hidden with Sookie since Witches are looking for him. As Eric is staying with Sookie... he is kinder, sweeter, gentler that ever before. Sookie starts to realize that she likes this side of Eric. It is not long before Sookie and Eric are intimate, which Harris wrote beautiful I might add! Sookie even though is loving being with the nicer Eric and distraught because Jason is missing. No one knows were he is, and everything is trying to help Sookie find him with no avail. Sookie and the Vampire crew decide that they need to go after the Witches and the rest of there clan. The Vampires actually teamed up with the Weres, Wiccans, and the Shifters from Hotshots (these guys are an incest clan of Weres that you later in the book find out are were-panthers) The fight between the Witches and the Vamp, Weres, Shifter and Wiccans was pretty great. Alcide basically banished Debbie from him which was AWESOME, but the is a not a big surprise (awesome but not a big surprise) at the end for about Debbie!! We also meet a Fairy for a short while, she was kind of cool (hopefully she will be in the books again??) The fairy seems to have some type of beauty that the Vampires can't seems to turn away from. As soon as they saw her they wanted to her, though she didn`t want anything to so with them. That was interesting!! Jason is found with the help of the leader were-panther. I can't wait to read more about Jason transformation in the next book. All in all Eric does get his memory back and remembers nothing of the time and caring between himself and Sookie. I really hope that he will sooner or later, because it brought out such a beauty between Erin and Sookie. This book was so great because of those two characters.

I have always like Bill and most likely I will keep likely Bill, but Eric other side was wonderful (Don`t get me wrong, his "bad side" was awesome too but WOW he was fantastic here). Maybe you can think about it as Eric truer side, loving side was revealed in this book. Maybe, maybe not... I don't know but I must keep reading these books and I hope you do too!!

Dual Natured Eric & Sookie Make Sparks Fly!

Sookie Stackhouse, the attractive, telepathic barmaid from Bon Temps, LA, makes her fourth appearance in "Dead To The World," which I think is the best book in the series, so far. Boyfriend Bill, a Civil War veteran and vampire, is pretty much out of the picture here. He has been sent to Peru, by the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, to continue his research for the extensive vampire data base he is building. Sookie has ambivalent feelings about her old beau. He has proved to have a cheatin' heart, along with other unfaithful body parts. This is unfortunate because Sookie thought she had found the man of her dreams. However, there seems to be an abundance of other men, all preternatural, who are very interested in getting to know our Sookie better. And it is best for her to stick with the superhumans. She can't read their minds, and doesn't need to worry about keeping their inner voices at bay.

Driving home from work early New Year's morning, (there was a huge party at Merlotte's Bar), Sookie sees a half-naked, shoeless man running down the road. When she stops to help the poor guy, she realizes it is Eric, charismatic owner of Club Fangtasia, and vampire Sheriff of Area 5, which encompasses Shreveport and Bon Temps. It appears that Eric has amnesia, and remembers nothing about his life except that he is a vampire. He doesn't even know why he is running, or where. He is only aware of his terror - a very strange state for the strong, confident warrior he has always been. We learn later from Eric's cohorts that a coven of powerful witches, who use their magic for dark purposes, are attempting to take control of all the supernaturals in Area 5 - vampires, werewolves, shifters, etc.. When Eric refused to cooperate with them, they cast a spell taking away his memory. Sookie brings Eric home to care for him, through sheer kindness. Her brother Jason interferes with her altruism, however, when Eric's second in command visits to figure out an emergency course of action. Eric must remain in hiding and Jason negotiates a whopping $35,000. babysitting fee for his sister. Sookie finds that Eric is no longer the suave, scary, business-first, head-honcho vampire that she had been accustomed to. He is now tender, sincere, attentive, romantic, protective of her and grateful for her loyalty and decency. Our heroine doesn't know what to make of this drastic change, until sparks begin to fly between the two. She then decides to go with the flow. After all, Bill has been gone a long time.

"Dead To The World's" pace is fast and the action is nonstop throughout. Jason goes missing, the evil witches are on the loose, Alcide Herveaux, the hunky werewolf (from "Club Dead"), and his pack become involved in what is to be a major battle between the forces of good and evil, new characters are introduced, and much more. Per usual Charlaine Harris fills her well written narrative with humor, suspense, and thrilling plot twists and turns. The finale is outrageously good! Terrific escapist reading. I couldn't put the novel down.

Exciting

The premise of this series is that vampires have "come out" to the world at large, become legal citizens in many countries, and their effect of living in a small community in the American South. The main character is Sookie Stackhouse, who works as a barmaid and who happens to be telepathic. I won't go over the plot except to say that you can read about it from the PW or Booklist descriptions above.
I loved this book. It's very exciting, tension filled-a real page turner. I've been a fan from the beginning, and I think this may be my favorite in the series so far. Sookie is still her wonderful self, the plotting is fantastic, and I loved the little bits of information planted here and there about certain characters. (There is a certain duo I am really rooting for, conventions be damned!) I liked Bill very much in the first book, but after #2 and #3, I was ready to see Sookie move on. I found the Eric storyline in this book to be charming, and I am glad to see that Sookie herself seems to have seen it as nothing more than a temporary comfort. Having the field wide open at this point leaves many interesting possibilities for the future! And here's hoping none of them get poor Sookie beaten up again.
The only thing that gives me pause is the inevitable comparison to Laurell K. Hamilton. I have bristled at the Anita Blake comparisons since the first Sookie book came out, but even I will admit it may be getting a bit too close for comfort with the introduction of certain characters and plot devices. I've read all the Anita Blakes but the last two, as I just got bored with the lack of plot while Anita becomes ever more tiresome. With that in mind, I must admit that I laughed out loud when Sookie asks Alcide if one becomes a werewolf packmaster by fighting for the title and he replies that no, one gets elected.

Outstanding-as truthful as it gets and easy to read

This book was outstanding. I would like to say, that I am a Catholic Christian who had an addiction to pornography and it was about to destroy my marriage. I have been porn-free since September 17, 2011. This book has ten stories of people who were like me, addicted to pornography or involved in pornography. It feels like a little bit of every story in this book is part of my story. Overcoming pornography was (and still is) hard for me, it has been literally the hardest thing I have ever done, but my marriage was worth being rid of it. I can truly say how much happier of a person I am without it. The stories in this book are short (about ten pages each) and you can actually read it in a day if you tried hard enough. The stories bring us into the deep emotions and struggles of what this "forbidden fruit" brings to the world. I do not want to ruin any of the stories and give them away, but if you open your ears and listen to these stories, they can change your life. If you want the truth about pornography, what it does to families, and what lies in the industry, and have been wanting to be rid of it in your life, then this book shows that miracles do happen and marriages and families can be saved.

SLAVERY STILL EXISTS - JESUS IS FREEDOM

Whether pornography is a struggle for you or not, this book is for EVERYONE. Whether you are a user of porn or are suffering in a relationship with someone who is using porn - PORN IS NOT A HARMLESS,VICTIMLESS ENTERTAINMENT- this book brings HOPE!
Today, addictions are on the rise, surpassing all other "ailments". If you add "abusive use" into the equation, then few are left untouched, either using themselves or loving someone who is using. The pain of this world, the sins of others, and our own personal sins can only be overcome by facing the truth and at the same time, allowing the deep love of God to hold us in the midst of that truth. We are not alone. Jesus came to reveal God our Father's love. He is Whom we seek. It is His love and union with Him that we long for. Self medicating through use of alcohol, drugs, porn, and other sexual sin only deepens shame and open's the mind and heart (like a Front Door!) to the menacing life-robbing thief "who prowls the world seeking the ruin of souls." This is a seductive allurement; initially it may feel good, like you are in control, you can "take care of yourself." I doubt few realize that this path will not lead to life and peace - rather, each use is a heavy chain binding, constricting, deepening the pain until, even the idea of a different life seems lost. A soul-death suffocating hope, stealing the day and terrorizing the night can set in....you find yourself living in Hell. BUT Jesus came to set the prisoner free! His Love can Transform, Heal, Re-create, yes - even raise the DEAD. I know. I was once dead inside. Jesus set me free and continues to renew my heart and mind in His Word and Sacraments. Wherever you are, no matter how deep the pit, He will go lower, UNDERNEATH YOUR PAIN, to rescue you.
The personal witnesses and honest retelling of each one of these people's life experience deeply touched me. I have already bought several copies and given them to others, including a couple of priests. I hope to help bring a wide distribution (if it is God's Holy Will) to my parish. I pray more and more people will discover DELIVERANCE through this book.
This little book will not only raise your awareness of the pervasive problem that porn is, but will ENCOURAGE you.
Jesus's love penetrates the darkest night. the loneliest heart. the coldest. cruelest suffering.

Eye opening

Let me start off by saying that I had never heard of porn described as an addiction. I had this idea that it was the sort of thing that certain kinds of people chose to do and that they were completely to blame for their choice and deserved what they got. I didn't really know much about it except that I thought it was an evil thing that evil people with seedy backgrounds did. At any rate, I would certainly never be caught dead associating with such people. Imagine my shock in reading this book where some stories featured individuals who were raised in "loving Christian families!" Worse, that some carried on with their lunacy even as they continued to go to church. I am still incredulous that they could have gone wrong so terribly, but, I ask myself, who would want to make up such frightful stories about themselves?!? They must be true...I was so filled with horror at the stories I read in this book that I could not even finish it. But I also began to feel compassion for these people, whereas in the past, I had only felt disgust and loathing when I heard about people engaged in pornography - almost as if they were a different species. This book has revealed their humanity. I admire the courage it took for them to come forward and share their struggles, so that others may know that there is hope for healing and reconciliation. I am grateful to them for revealing how widespread this menace is and that no one is immune to its perils. Their stories have made me a more vigilant parent, and I hope, a more compassionate individual.

Nice piano book of James Blunt song hits

First off, I think James Blunt is a master at his craft - that is singing songs with great intensity and feeling. He loves what he does and it shows in his music. Now, I play piano and I wanted of course to be able to play some of his songs for piano and I highly recommend this piano book for all those that love his music. It is written for beginner/intermediate players and will be a great addition to your repertoire of piano songs. Can't wait for another piano book by James B.

About the Author
Benjamin Keen (PhD, Yale University) was professor Emeritus from Northern Illinois University. He was a leading scholar in the field of Latin American history, particularly the colonial period in Mexico. Although retired from active teaching for some years, Keen continued to research, write, and lecture until his death in late 2002.

Keith Haynes (PhD 1981 Northern Illinois University) is Professor of History at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he has taught Latin American and U.S. diplomatic history for more than 20 years.

Decent Historical Summary

This book, although good in its use of terms and in its summary of Latin American History, for me personally does not do a terrific job of explaining everything that happened. This book is also difficult to read in some places, and often spends too much time dealing with a topic that in my opinion is relatively insiginficant to the history of Latin America. I used this book as a textbook for my I.B. History of the Americas course, and I do not feel like it is a good source for the Higher Level exam. If you just want a general summary of Latin American History, this is the book for you. However, for those like me who need a serious text for either a class or a test, I would find a source with more thorough notes.

Concise and readable, this text offers an excellent account of Latin American History. This sixth edition, new for 2000, is even better than its predecessors, offering an update on the happenings in each of the country's covered. This book is an excellent choice for anyone who is either just starting out in the field of Latin American studies or just looking to add to their collection.
