How to Think About Weird Things: Critical Thinking for a New Age, by Theodore Schick, Lewis Vaughn

This brief, affordable text helps students to think critically, using examples from the weird claims and beliefs that abound in our culture to demonstrate the sound evaluation of any claim. It explains step-by-step how to sort through reasons, evaluate evidence, and tell when a claim (no matter how strange) is likely to be true. The emphasis is neither on debunking nor on advocating specific assertions, but on explaining principles of critical thinking that enable readers to evaluate claims for themselves. The authors focus on types of logical arguments and proofs, making How to Think about Weird Things a versatile supplement for logic, critical thinking, philosophy of science, or any other science appreciation courses.

A Commanding Examination of Rational Thinking
By TW
One cannot avoid thinking, sidestep decision making, nor elude the bombardment of poor logic and irrationality so abundant in society. It makes perfect sense to learn to become as clear a thinker and decision maker as possible. Schick and Vaughn, in their Critical Thinking masterpiece "How to Think About Weird Things" dive head first into the fundaments of rational thought, the aspects of human nature that produce irrationality, and the means to think as productively as possible. Ripe with examples from absurd lines of thinking to common complex fallacies, the book covers all pertinent aspects of critical thinking.

Put best in their own words on page 2, the authors state:

"You hear a lot of `whats', but seldom any good `whys'. You hear the beliefs, but seldom any solid reasons behind them - nothing substantial enough to indicate that these assertions are likely to be true. You may hear naiveté, passionate advocacy, fierce denunciation, one-sided sifting of evidence, defense of the party line, leaps of faith, jumps to false conclusions, plunges into wishful thinking, and courageous stands on the shaky ground of subjective certainty. But the good reasons are missing. Without good `whys', our beliefs are simply arbitrary, with no more claim to knowledge than the random choice of a playing card. Without good `whys' to guide us, our beliefs lose their value in a world where beliefs are already a dime a dozen."

While this thinking may not resonate with everyone, the reality is that it should. If society as a whole shifted to more rational thought and a consistent standard of scrutiny among all beliefs, there would be a lot less friction on this planet and a lot more level headed views. How to Think About Weird Things offers a comprehensive overview of rational thinking aimed at causing such a positive shift, and thus I recommend this book to any serious thinker.

If you are looking for a book on new ways of thinking this is it.
By Michael
Interesting read. This book tests your critical thinking and pushes you to think of "weird things" through the light of the Socratic method and first principle thinking. It builds a good foundation for all learning.

Must Read For The Layman Interested In Science
By Bucherwurm
If you are a layman like myself with an interest in reading about science, this is a basic book in the philosophy of science that will aid in the rational analysis of scientific claims. Naturally the book wouldn't sell too many copies if the word "Philosophy" ended up in the title so we have this cutesy title that unfortunately may not give sufficient clues as to what is inside.
My wife is a believer in all things paranormal, and I am a true skeptic with an education in experimental psychology. We have a shaky truce in our house about these issues, and I have developed an intense interest in the claims made in astrology, channeling, ESP, NDE and the like.
This book lays out the logic for analyzing claims made in the name of science or the paranormal. We are told first of all that knowledge without evidence is not knowledge; it may constitute a belief, but it is not knowledge. What is reliable evidence? What is objective truth? What is the value of anecdotal evidence? What are the criteria of adequacy for a hypothesis? How is a scientific study properly set up? What sort of studies can establish the effectiveness of a medical treatment beyond a reasonable doubt?
The author discusses all of this and more as he applies the logic learned to medicine, dowsing, astrology, ESP, Channeling, and even UFO abductions. Its an informative, entertaining book that will educate without boring you or even making your poor brain work overtime. If nothing else you can read the book, and impress (or bore) your friends by telling them you just read a book on applied epistemology.

About the Author
Shulim or Nikolai Aleksandrovich Notovich, known in the West as Nicolas Notovitch (1858-after 1916) was a Belarusian Jewish adventurer who claimed to be a Russian aristocrat and journalist. Notovitch is known for his 1887 book claiming that during his unknown years, Jesus left Galilee for India and studied with Buddhists and Hindus there before returning to Judea. Notovitch's claim was based on a document he said he had seen at the Hemis Monastery while he stayed there,

While the historical "accuracy" of this book is under some question, if accurate, it does provide a reasonable account of the missing years of Jesus' life. It also goes deeply into how and why the teachings of Jesus split so wildly from traditional Judaism, and provides a rational account of how so many Eastern ideas found their way into his teachings. I will be the first to admit that my beliefs on Jesus are not the standard theology taught in seminaries and churches throughout the world, but in my mind, it speaks to the influences that Jesus found to be Godly, and underpins why Christianity, and truly Christian beliefs, are the most humane and loving of the three religions worshipping the God of Abraham.

A 19TH CENTURY ACCOUNT OF JESUS' PURPORTED TRAVELS TO INDIA, NEPAL, ETC.
By Steven H Propp
Nicolas Notovitch (born 1858) was a Russian aristocrat, Cossack officer, and journalist. This book was first published in France in 1894. Notovitch wrote in the Foreword, "I undertook a series of extended journeys through the Orient... and finally, in 1887, made an excursion into India... In the course of one of my visits to a Bubbhist convent, I learned from the chief Lama that there existed very ancient memoirs, treating of the life of Christ ... I visited Himis, a large convent in the outskirts of [Leh], where I was informed by the Lama that the monastic libraries contained a few copies of the manuscript in question... An unfortunate acccident, whereby my leg was fractured, furnished me with a totally unexpected pretext to enter the monastery... and I took advantage of my short stay among these monks to obtain the privilege of seeing the manuscripts relating to Christ. With the aid of my interpreter, who translated from the Tibetan tongue, I carefully transcribed the verses as they were read by the Lama.

"Entertaining no doubt of the authenticity of this narrative, written with the utmost precision by Brahmin historians and Buddhists of India and Nepal, my intention was to publish the translation on my return to Europe... I addressed myself to several well-known ecclesiastics... the celebrated archbishop of Kiev, believed my discovery to be of great importance, but he earnestly tried to dissuade me from giving the memoirs publicly... I then called on... [Joseph Ernest Renan, author of The Life of Jesus]... At the end of the interview M. Renan proposed that I should intrust him with the memoirs in question, that he might make a report on them to the Academy... [Yet] I feared if I accepted this association I would only receive the bare honor of discovering the chronicles, while [Renan] would reap the glory of the publication and of the commentaries... Soon after the death of M. Renan... I therefore prepared my notes, and now publish them... Note: In the course of my travels I took many curious photographs, but when I came to examine the negatives on my return to India I was dismayed to find that they were absolutely destroyed."

The book begins with a lengthy essay by Notovitch, "A Journey to Thibet," that purports to describe his travels. This "Life of Saint Issa - The Best of the Sons of Men" is subdivided (in biblical fashion) into chapters and verses. He closes with an "Epitome," which explains that "The two manuscripts read to me by the lama ... were compiled from diverse copies written in the Thibetan tongue, translated from rolls... written in the Pail tongue... The chroniclers were Buddhists..."

The book says that "the time had come, which the Supreme Being, in his boundless clemency, had chosen to incarnate himself in a human being." (IV, 1) "The parents of this new-born child were poor" (IV, 6). "When Issa had attained the age of thirteen, when an Israelite should take a wife... It was then that Issa clandestinely left his father's house, went out of Jerusalem, and, in company with some merchants, traveled toward Sindh, that he might perfect himself in the divine word and study the laws of the great Buddhas." (IV, 10-13) Under "the white priests of Brahma," they "taught him to read and understand the Vedas, to heal by prayer, to teach and to explain the Holy Scripture, to cast out evil spirits from the body of man..." (V, 3-4). He journeyed to Nepal, and "applied himself to the study of the sacred rolls... Six years later, Issa, whom the Buddha had chosen to spread his holy word, could perfectly explain the sacred rolls" (VI, 2-5). He journeyed to Persia, where "the priests were terrified and forbade the inhabitants to listen to him." (VIII, 1)

Finally, Issa "was twenty-nine years of age when he arrived in the land of Israel." (IX, 1) "But the rulers of the cities feared him..." (X, 1-3). "Saint Issa thus taught the people of Israel for three years in every city, in every village, on the roadways, and in the fields, and all that he had predicted had come to pass" (XIII, 1). "The Governor became violently enraged and ordered the death of Issa" (XIII, 23). "At sunset, the agony of Issa came to an end... the soul of this just man detached itself from his body to become part of the Divinity." (XIV, 3) After Pilate had given Issa's body to his relations for burial, "Three days later the governor sent his soldiers to take up the body of Issa and bury it elsewhere... the sepulcher was found open and empty by the multitude; and the rumor immediately spread that the Supreme Judge had sent his angels to take away the mortal remains of the saint..." (XIV, 3-7).

The operative counsel is always "Caveat Emptor" when dealing with such speculative accounts; the book is declared fraudulent (including by Notovitch's own confession) in books such as The Issa Tale That Will Not Die: Nicholas Notovitch and His Fraudulent Gospel, Indology, Indomania, and Orientalism, and New Testament Apocrypha: Gospels and Related Writings, Vol. 1.

Other "Jesus in India" books include The Jesus Mystery, The Lost Years of Jesus, Jesus Lived in India: His Unknown Life Before and After Crucifixion, as well as the movie, The Lost Years of Jesus.

Industrial Organization: Markets and Strategies provides an up-to-date account of modern industrial organization that blends theory with real-world applications. Written in a clear and accessible style, it acquaints the reader with the most important models for understanding strategies chosen by firms with market power and shows how such firms adapt to different market environments. It covers a wide range of topics including recent developments on product bundling, branding strategies, restrictions in vertical supply relationships, intellectual property protection, and two-sided markets, to name just a few. Models are presented in detail and the main results are summarized as lessons. Formal theory is complemented throughout by real-world cases that show students how it applies to actual organizational settings. The book is accompanied by a website containing a number of additional resources for lecturers and students, including exercises, answers to review questions, case material and slides.

Review
"This is a crisply written account of modern Industrial Organization which should be a major reference for years to come. I particularly enjoyed the "Lessons" which summarize and keep the reader on-track with the economic insights from the models presented. Congratulations to the authors for this magnum opus." - Simon P. Anderson, Commonwealth Professor of Economics, University of Virginia

"The depth and coverage of topics in Industrial Organization: Markets and Strategies is staggering. Professors Belleflamme and Peitz have produced a real gem. Innovative, timely, and thorough." - Michael Baye, Bert Elwert Professor of Business Economics, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

"As important contributors to the theory of Industrial Organisation, Belleflamme and Peitz are ideally placed to explain the implications for strategists and policy makers -- their book will be valuable to students and practitioners alike." - Paul Klemperer, FBA, Edgeworth Professor of Economics, University of Oxford; former-Member UK Competition Commission

"Industrial economists have been blessed with some significant texts over the centuries. However, until Belleflamme and Peitz, no one had attempted to cover it all. Markets and Strategies does that. It is all here. From monopoly to competition, from simple pricing to pricing with menus, from bundling to innovation. There is no topic left untouched. It is a must have for teachers and students alike." - Joshua Gans, Professor of Management, Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne

"Paul Belleflamme and Martin Peitz's Industrial Organization: Markets and Strategies offers a fully up-to-date treatment of modern industrial organization, including recent work on intellectual property, new forms of price discrimination, competition policy and two-sided markets. Theoretically inclined, clearly written, and mathematically accessible to a wide audience (including advanced undergraduates), it usefully provides motivation through short business-strategy or competition-policy cases. A tour de force and a must-read for students, researchers and practitioners of the field." - Jean Tirole, Director, Fondation Jean-Jacques Laffont, Toulouse School of Economics

"Paul Belleflamme and Martin Peitz provide a very careful and thorough up to date treatment of the main topics in Industrial Organization analysis. They do so in a pedagogical and clear way, including the step-by-step development of the models and contrast with real-world cases, that will prove very effective with students. The book also includes the analysis of issues relevant for the information economy such as bundling, intellectual property and two-sided markets." - Xavier Vives, Professor of Economics, IESE Business School

A comprehensive book on industrial organization models
By Peder Erling Xstbye
The book is a good and up to date comprehensive guide to the models of industrial organization. One of the special advantages of the book is the incorporation of newer theories related to network effects, platform competition and the information economy. If you for instance wonder what theories that can explain why I use scarce time to write a review and how this review will affect the competition in the books and platform market, read this book. Most of the models are illustrated with relevant and up to date practical examples. The book is mostly theoretical, but gives some insight to the world of econometric studies in industrial organization.

The book is more advanced than many of its competitors, with more focus mathematical modeling. A critic to the mathematical models used is that they are often parameterized linear models and numerical examples are necessary to illustrate the point. A question is what probative force and inferential value one will get from so specific models. Maybe a more general model and a verbal discussion would have been better. I miss some philosophical and historical aspects of industrial organization. Mostly the book goes directly to the modern models. The book could be more critical to the methodology and inferential value of the models used, although the equilibrium selection problem in game theoretic models is vaguely mentioned.

As a practitioner of antitrust, I would have preferred that the references to the antitrust laws of US and competition laws of EU would have been more precise, but it is not a law book at the end of the day. For a full understanding I recommend that it is read together with a book on antitrust law and some book or article on the philosophical aspects of modeling in industrial organization.

A must for Industrial Organization advanced undergraduates courses
By Marcelo Celani
Belleflamme et al book is an important contribution to the field. It is comprehensive, updated and clearly written.
I think this book it is on the way of replacing Church and Ware's book as a standard material for advanced undergraduates IO courses. More technical than average undergraduated books. So, it is more challenging but improves significantly the learning process with good empirical cases.
Another contribution Belleflamme's books has is a very thorough discussion of quality, information and network issues. Those sections are better organized and structured than similar books. It is the first time I see a book with an Intermediated goods section.
Perhaps it would be nice to have a more ample discussion on the theory of the firm including, coasian, transaction cost, property rights and resource view theories.

Time is running out for the passengers and crew of the tourist cruiser Selene, incarcerated in a sea of choking lunar dust. On the surface, her rescuers find their resources stretched to the limit by the pitiless and unpredictable conditions of a totally alien environment.

A brilliantly imagined story of human ingenuity and survival, A Fall of Moondust is a tour-de-force of psychological suspense and sustained dramatic tension.

My First Arthur C. Clarke Novel And I Was Not Disappointed
By Ray Moon
I had wanted to read some classic science fiction. I found two very inexpensive Arthur C. Clarke novels, so I purchased them. I was not disappointed.

The basic story is centered around a catastrophe to a tourist vessel, named Selene, on the moon. Only the setting made this a science fiction novel; otherwise, it basically was simple thriller with a strong technology aspect. But, an enjoyable thriller at that.

The basic story line proceeds at a good pace, then the catastrophe happens and storyline slows a little while everyone gets accustom to the new situation and what to do. Luckily, this novel has multiple threads so those take up the slack. There were plenty of twists, turns, and dead-ends. I was hooked into the story early and didn’t want to stop reading. In fact, I stayed up to 3 am to finish the novel. This is one of my major criteria for a high star rating.

The B-stories centered mainly between the Selene’s captain and stewardess, and the captain and a surprise passenger. There even is a slight C-story as the progression of the astronomer, who was instrumental in finding the Selene, from is disagreeable self to — well, I will leave that to you.

Now, this novel was written in 1960 so it is little dated, but to me that is one of the charms of this novel. I took it on to see how well the author predicted the future. The author praised the cathode ray tube or CRT. I bet that especially at the time of this novel, most people will have no clue about what a CRT was. Another aspect I had to chuckle was when the stewardess was going through the emergency supplies and found a thousand cigarettes. I do not think that cigarettes have not been part of any emergency kits for some time.

This novel relies much on technology. Most of this was good and contributed to the flow of the story. That part of the novel appeared to be realistic. Nothing stood out to me that was unbelievable.

Based upon the above, I rate this novel with five stars. I am looking forward to reading another one of Arthur C. Clarke’s novels.

Great book by a great author
By movie viewer
I remember reading this book when it first came out. The premise was unique. A ship that sailed on a sea of dust. That was a wondrous idea to start with. Then the ship sinks. How do you find it? Once you find it, how do you rescue the passengers? This book is packed with suspense and danger as well as some interesting characters.
We know now that no such sea of dust exists on the moon, or, for that matter, anywhere else in the solar system, but it might exist in some other place. Given the existence of such a sea, the rest of the story works just as well.
Arthur C. Clarke had a brilliant mind and this book is one of the best products of that mind. After fifty six years, it is still as readable as the year it was first published. A must read for any sci-fi fan

Love that it's now available on the Kindle
By Julia
I read this novel years ago when I was kid in one of the Reader's Digest Condensed Book editions that my mother used to receive as a subscription. The story is like The Poseidon Adventure on the Moon but better (I suspect the writers of The Poseidon Adventure might have gotten some of their ideas from this novel.) I loved it then, thought the idea was pretty original (I always have read a lot of science fiction since I first learned to read) and well thought out. The Reader's Digest books are long gone (I think my mother got rid of them in a yard sale when she packed up her house up north to move south.) When I saw it was available on the Kindle, I was thrilled - I have collected so many books in my lifetime that I have reached the point where I need to weed out my collection frequently to make room for more. Therefore, with the exception of large picture books on art or interior decorating (my passions) I don't buy hard copies of books any more; just buy them on the Kindle so they take up less space.

The way this book is written, it easily puts you in the position of the tourists on the Selene who are trapped by "the fall of moondust". When you're reading the story, you feel as if this could happen to you.

This novel isn't "Childhood's End" but it is a good, suspenseful disaster story much better than anything Irwin Allen, the King of Hollywood disaster movies, ever came up with. It would make a very good movie and I've always wondered why no one in Hollywood ever produced one based on this work. I would definitely pay to go see such a movie.

I'm looking forward to reading the unabridged version on the Kindle.

The Capstone of Farrell's "Cosmic War" Research
By ratbatblue
Disclosure: This review has no accompanying "verified purchase" stamp because I purchased this book via the author's website. Note: the direct-from-publisher price, at the time I write this review, is fifteen dollars.

This book is a slim volume with a lot to say. It does stand alone, but I believe the reader would be better served by first reading Farrell's "Cosmic War" series; at the least, the entry titled "Genes, Giants, Monsters, and Men." The Cosmic War books are a set-up for this profound analysis of what the authors dub "Yahwism," which I might describe in my own words as, the monotheistic world religions & their apocalyptic tenets, AND their effect on human history and development. The stunning conclusion to be reached after reading Farrell (and occasional co-author deHart)'s impeccable and painstaking research is: Yahweh is a fraud, and the worship of said fraud is a dead end for humanity.

Authors Farrell and deHart begin this book by reviewing the "ancient topological metaphor" which they discussed at length in a previous collaboration, "The Grid of the Gods." The "topological metaphor", the basis of cosmology for the Hindus, Egyptians, and Mayans, is a means of understanding the nature of beginnings without resorting to "faith". The metaphor itself is a bit difficult for this reviewer to grasp, but it addresses the question of, "Why is there not nothing?" and is answered by the authors thus: "....let us perform a simple 'thought experiment'. Imagine an absolutely undifferentiated 'something'. The Neoplatonists referred to this 'something' as 'simplicity'. Note that, from the physics point of view and from that of Hinduism itself, we are dealing with a 'nothing', since it has no differentiated or distinguishing features whatsoever. Now imagine one 'brackets' this nothing, separating off a 'region' of nothing from the rest of the nothing...At the instant one does so, one ends up with three things, each a kind of 'differentiated nothing'. One ends with: 1) the 'bracketed' region of nothing; 2) the rest of the nothing; and 3) the 'surface' that the two regions share. Note something else. From a purely physics point of view, this occurs without time, since time is measured only by the relative positions of differentiated things with respect to each other. The 'regions of nothing' and their common surface are, so to speak, still eternal, and yet, at the same instant, a kind of 'time' has emerged simultaneously with the operation of differentiating itself....." and so on the authors go, further explaining and developing this metaphor. (While the authors do not mention the holographic theory of reality, which is so eloquently discussed by Michael Talbot in his immortal "The Holographic Universe", I do see how it neatly dovetails with the ancient topological metaphor. And, indeed, Farrell and deHart point out that, no matter how many times the "nothing" is differentiated or "bracketed", each differentiation retains the signature of the undifferentiated "nothing". Those who understand what a hologram is will note the correlation.

After reviewing the metaphor, the authors tackle the subject of "Yahwism," explaining how the biblical god Yahweh threw a monkey wrench into humanity's ancient social order by declaring himself to be the Supreme Being, choosing the Israelites as his favored people, giving them the 10 commandments in which he explicitly forbade murder, but then sanctioning murder as long as it was done in response to Yahweh's command. The authors examine the various apocalyptic dogmas of the three Yahwist religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam); they review the Freemason Albert Pike's seemingly prescient 1871 letter describing how three world wars would be fought in order to bring about the dissolution of the monotheistic religions and to establish "Luciferism"; and they touch on Zionism (hoo boy) and its effect on the current world. In this volume, Farrell and deHart limit their discussion to the psycho- and sociological effects of the Yahwist religions; for a stunning examination of who Yahweh might actually BE--other than "the Supreme Being"--I point again to Farrell's jaw-dropping "Genes, Giants, Monsters and Men".

Fear not, pilgrims. While a big sign marked "DEAD END" on a path you've been traveling all of your Western-culture life may produce a jarring amount of cognitive dissonance, there is another way. If you haven't yet, read Talbot's aforementioned book; that is as good a place to start your new path as any. Eat clean, think clean, be clean.

Quite A Revelation!
By Mr. Neil M C Sinclair
Both writers on top form again identifying man's exploitative inhumanity to man as having its roots in the time of the Exodus, the time of the overthrow of mankind's original scientifically based religion [pejoratively referred to as idolatry]. The reference to the First Principle and its first three derivations as the only entities that could genuinely be called God is pure exegetical brilliance! Three cheers for the effort. If only enough of today's society we were willing to return the Topological Metaphor in the Physical Medium and promote a renaissance of the Paleo Ancient Very High Civilization of High Antiquity what a wonderful world this would be. Alas, it is certain that the Neo-Liberal economic system will maintain its grip and drag us down into Dante's Inferno.... Naw, only kidding - the future's got to be better than that!
