Could have been good, but....

I agree with one other reviewer here, that the book seems to be written for children, not for adults.
Many of the illustrations are generic and seem unneccessary space-fillers.
The authors could have made this into a great and useful book, by giving us the whole original story, and then a summary of the investigation and analysis being done so far by investigators.
Instead they decided to perpetuate the myths and hoaxes - sad indeed.
If you are looking for an objective review of old west UFO reports, you need to look at Kevin Randle's History of Ufo Crashes or Chris Aubeck & Jacques Vall�e's Wonders in the Sky: Unexplained Aerial Objects from Antiquity to Modern Times.

Great textbook

Feldman did a great job simplifying terms and theories into this textbook. Highly recommend and enjoyed it. The only thing i didnt like was the way it was manufactured. Glue started coming off and some pages came loose. Could have been my book being defective

Love this book!. Very well written and gorgeous pictures! Excellent recipes. But only follow these recommendations if you want to optimize your child's physical and brain development, while drastically reducing dental disease. All others can stick with a processed food diet. I have come to realize that any work done by Tim Noakes and his Foundation is FIRST CLASS!!!!. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK PROFESSOR NOAKES!

Very well written

Since kids are my toughest customers when it comes to food, I had to purchase this book. I find that I like some of the recipes better than my kids. They have liked some of the things I have prepared from the book. I think this is very well written although I did stumble a bit at the metric measurements but have been happy to better learn the metric system and apply it in the kitchen.

Just lovely

Oh, Mary! How I love you so. This book is as delightful and enriching as any of her other collection of poems. Mary knows nature. She knows presence. She knows how to love her life. She is a genius who never seems to feel the need to be "clever." ("Clever is for cocktail parties" a poetry teacher once told me.) Oliver expresses her wisdom in the purest, clearest, most sacred poems. Whenever I feel down, I read "Why I Wake Early": "Hello sun in my face," I say.

A wonderful collection of poems by Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver.

I admit to not liking most of the contemporary poems and poets I have read in various poem publications and books. Many of the so-called modern free verse poems today are incomprehensible and absolutely meaningless with no purpose except to confuse anyone reading them. The old masters will always remain my favorite poets. However, after reading a recently published Mary Oliver book of poems, which I enjoyed, I decided to read more of her poems. This poetry collection (New and Selected Poems by Mary Oliver) was published in 1992 and includes a large number of her poems created between 1963 and 1992. Her poetry is often beautiful, easy to understand and have real meaning.

This poems in this volume are organized into the years they were written. New poems (1991-1992), from House of light (1990), from Dream work (1986), from American primitive (1983), from Twelve Moons (1979), from The night traveler and Sleeping in the forest (1978 also includes five poems not previously published in any volume), from The river Styx, Ohio and other poems (1972), and from No voyage and other poems (1963-1965). There are so many wonderful poems in this collection that it is difficult to choose any favorite ones, but here is just a small sample of the ones I really liked a lot. When death comes, The waterfall, October, The sea, Wild Geese, Starfish, Sunrise, Lightening, and The first snow.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of Mary Oliver's poetry, you should check out this volume.

Inspiring

Many of Mary Oliver’s poems flow with an anthem-like lyricism that often attests to the grandeur and mystery of the natural world. She plays the role of a quiet witness in order to observe and learn what life has to teach: how happiness is possible if you resign yourself to the rapture and beauty of the world around you. She wants to be invested in the glory and energy of nature and understand its holiness, its closeness to God. She loves all flora and fauna and wants to connect to them. Her compassion for life allows her to look upon the world with gratitude and appreciation. The wildness and sheer power and intensity of nature is more than miraculous; it is her source of bliss and strength. She allows the power of the natural world to keep her memory active with visions and dreams of her elemental self becoming one with the universe. Her poetry is an attempt to achieve that union, and few poets can inspire the way she does.

Eye opening!

This is a well-written guide to driving under the influence law. It really opened my eyes to some of the deficiencies in our police and criminal justice system. Redlich shows that field sobriety tests are unsound, to put it nicely (even sober people will fail them). Many other parts of the system are designed to produce convictions rather than to assess guilt or innocence fairly.

This is an easy, fast read. The writing is clear and I think every driver should read it. You might be very glad you did, someday!

Drunk Driving System Gets Smashed

If you're looking for a tepid book, this isn't for you. Longtime DUI lawyer Warren Redlich provides a no holds barred view of the drunk driving justice system. Agree or disagree with him, the book must be part of the DUI discussion and will open the eyes of many who read it.

A Guide to Cops - The TV Show and in Real Life

In this quick-reading book, experienced DUI defense attorney Warren Redlich steps the reader step-by-step through the process a DUI defendant (culpable or otherwise) will experience. Reading the book is like watching "Cops," but from a less worshipful perspective.

You have the right to remain silent: Exercise that right, Redlich exhorts the reader! Cops will regularly claim one's speech is slurred so there's no advantage to talking when stopped.

Redlich shows that field sobriety tests are junk science. Sober people routinely fail them. He perceptively notes that field sobriety test standards haven't changed even though blood alcohol thresholds have dropped in recent years. The field tests suddenly went from differentiating above versus below 0.1% to differentiating above versus below 0.08% blood alcohol levels? One should refuse to take a field sobriety test.

Redlich is a DUI defense attorney but he notes that his myopic professional incentive is to encourage yet-more stringent DUI rules. More money for DUI defense attorneys! But he instead has the intellectual honesty to describe a system run amok combining angry, perhaps grieving, neo-Prohibitionist MADD members; cops incentivized to make successful arrests; prosecutors who want to win cases; and judges in fear of being labeled soft on crime. (Redlich emphatically encourages clients who go to trial to seek jury, not bench, trials.)

Perhaps the only way to (almost) surely stay out of this monster's maw is to not drink and drive. Indeed, Redlich suggests that, for some people, it may be more feasible to eliminate driving in conjunction with drinking rather than to eliminate drinking.

Redlich argues that good defense attorneys force cops to do their jobs better. He has surely improved the quality of policing in New York and Florida where he practices and, hopefully by dint of this book, more broadly.

If only the undergraduate course I took used this book as the course book.

I taught an introductory undergraduate course on information theory to a small class with this book as the course book. While this book does not provide a basket full of lemmas and deep insight for doing research on quantifying information, it does what it aims to do flawlessly: provide a very accessible, lean, to-the-point and self-contained survey of the main theorems of information and coding theory. If only the undergraduate course I took back in the day had used this book as the course book.

great book

This is a great introductory book. Other than some basic math you need no other background to get started with this book. It is an effective tool for learn information theory. The Authors take a "build from the ground up" approach. A lot of authors try to go straight to information and entropy and then talk about source and code languages. In my opinion, starting the other way around actually makes things clearer as to what the information content that you are studying is.

Incomplete proofs, very short solution to exercise questions (just a hint), too much back and forth between chapters and unexplained theorems. Unless you need this book for school, don't buy this book.

Dams and What They Wrought

"Dams (Library of Congress Visual Sourcebooks)" is an important work that examines the impact of the behemoth structures on the human and geographical landscape throughout the United States.

Author Christine Macy weaves an account of how some of the more than 2.5 million dams have been built, accompanied by hundreds of photos, maps and charts detailing their construction. The black and white photos show changing landscapes, men and machines at work on the structures and the resulting changes in water flow and supply. The geological, political, engineering and human to build and then adjust to the dams are all part of the story as new projects created or denied development to huge areas of the country. Among the major projects are those of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Hoover Dam and those in the Northwest. As the book notes, dams are both welcomed and rejected, sometimes condemned as destroyers of nature, other times desired for their provision of irrigation for agriculture and human life.

Their importance in the development of the country cannot be overstated, especially in areas that either experienced disastrous flooding or droughts that prevented the growth of the human population.

The book is divided into eight geographical areas or watersheds, with explanations of how hydroelectric, mill, reservoir and other dams operate, and is part of the Norton/Library of Congress series. Included in the book is a CD containing hundreds of images, including many in color, data files and records.
