Viktor ... The dirty side of the Mafiya

This was the fourth book in Sapphire's series but only the second book with the Russkaya Mafiya.
We finally get Viktor's book. He is Tate's brother who is running the Bratva. He was first introduced in Secrets & sent to 'take care' of Emily's sister, Elaina. But he feels protective of her & he becomes her official guard, watching over her at 007. But what happens when someone starts sending threats to the family?
Elaina was a great character, you just wanted to hug her, I loved her spunkiness & sarcasm. And she was VERY protective of Viktor, especially during one scene, watch out.
And Viktor, the suit loving Boss, who just adores his Princess. I loved the Russian he spoke to her.
We did get a glimpse of some previous characters. Ares, short but sweet!!!
I loved Viktor, he thinks he is corrupted but so does Elaina, they were both in conflict thinking they weren't good for each other. Can they get their HEA?
Can't wait for the next book. Mafia. MC. Whatever you write next I'll love!!!

*SEXY, MYSTERIOUS, PASSIONATE, DANGEROUS!!! CANNOT GET ENOUGH!*

WOW!!! I was completely blown away by Corrupted! Another stunning and captivating novel by Sapphire Knight!

Corrupted is book #4 in her Russkaya Mafiya/Oath Keepers series. This book focuses on Viktor, Tate's brother, and Elaina, Emily's twin sister, and the dark side of the mafia. Even though this is book 4 in the series, it can be read after book 1, Secrets. But of course, I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading books 1-3 first! They are outstanding! :) Up until this book, Exposed has been my favorite novel in Sapphire's series. Yeah....that WAS my favorite until now! Corrupted takes you on a mystifying, fiery, and explosive journey through the hardships of love and life.

We are first introduced to Elaina and Viktor in Secrets. But we were only given a tiny morsel of the magnetic chemistry between these two characters. With a terrible and heart-wrenching past, Elaina is quick to guard herself from everyone. She's a strong, resilient, independent, and smart young woman, who does not trust easily. Yet beneath her hesitant and guarded exterior, she has a delicate, loving, and sensitive heart that only wants the same affections returned. And then there's Viktor, Tate's older brother. During the interactions with Viktor in Secrets, he came across as very puzzling and reserved. I didn't know much about him. Well, now I know exactly what type of man Viktor is.....he's two different men all together. There's the "mafia Viktor", unyielding, violent, malicious, and focused. Then there's "inner Viktor", possessive, intense, devoted, and protective...the type of man he is with Elaina. Sexy-swoon-tastic...without a doubt!!! (If he wasn't already spoken for, I'd totally call dibs on him!) Elaina and Viktor's personalities balance each other out effortlessly. They are both solitary people, but they also need the love and affection only family and loved ones can give. Their interactions and relationships with the supporting characters in the book are exactly how they treat one another. They show others the respect and courtesy that is bestowed unto themselves, unless otherwise revealed....which you'll definitely see that tenacious side of them both! With a side order of a crazy, wacko-psychotic named Kendall, this book offers everything. Love, endangerment, malice, insanity, lust, and obsession....I LOVED every page! I cannot wait for the next book in the series....I'm hoping more supporting characters get to share their story with us! :)

If you're already of fan of Sapphire Knight, then I don't have to tell you how fantastic her books are! But if you're a newbie, I strongly encourage you to pick up book 1, Secrets, and prepare yourself for a thrilling, and spine-tingling ride! All her books are a one-click-must-read! You won't be disappointed! :)

I'd love to be corrupted!

"I'm corrupted, Princess, I never promised to play fair."

Ok I love love love this book. Sapphire gets better with every book and I love getting to see her writing grow and somehow get better when I thought it had already peaked!

Using my 1-5 rating system of how many kleenex you need due to crying, how many times you need to change your panties, and how many asses you laugh off I give it:
3 kleenex's/5 panties/2 asses

First lets talk about the main characters:
Elaina
Elaina is Emily from Secrets long lost twin sister. IF you read book 1 you know how this was found out, if not take yourself off and read it so this book makes sense! Elaina grew up in foster care feeling unsafe and unloved. All she wants out of life is to make enough money to pay her bills and pay off the loan for her Camaro. What's a girl to do when you find out the truth about the beautiful brother in law of your twin?

Viktor
Viktor straight up steals this book. *sigh* He's such a perfect dichotomy of sinister and sweet. Viktor was raised to lead the Russian Maffiya and stepped out of the way for his baby brother Tate from Secrets. He ends up taking over the...messy side of the family business for his uncle. Despite being the boogie man of the Bratva he is always dressed impeccably and looks perfect. He avoided emotional connections until Elaina.

This book picks up a year after Secrets, Elaina is working in Club 007 where every day she's watched by Viktor. She doesn't know Viktor's family connections just that he protects her and due to a bad childhood is the only guy she trusts. Viktor craves Elaina in ways that would shock her possibly more than learning the truth of who he is. When an outside force shows up and forces him to reveal who he really is will Elaina accept him or run away out of fear?

My favorite quotes from this book:

Insightful and bold

At Bible College I was introduced to the idea of dispensationalism and the Rapture as ground work for my basic studies. However, a recent challenge to these ideas found me woefully lacking. While researching I came across this study and was immediately captivated as my eyes were opened to the rich bounty of resources William Watson had revealed.

I enjoyed the non-bias manner in which the matter is presented and yet with the strength of the individual Bereans set forth in their individual beliefs gave me additional insights I had not previously considered. My experience has found that authors are more often then not espousing their own bias` and therefore using only material that best promotes the thesis being put forward.

Additional insights brought out in this study would include, but not be limited too, Anti-Christ beliefs through the ages; millennialism; replacement theology and more...

Wonderful book. This absolutely blows apart the theory that J.N. Darby invented Dispensationalism and the Pretrib rapture. All the essential ideas associated with Dispensationalism were being discussed for a couple of centuries before Darby. Though a fully systematized Dispensationalism did not seem to appear before Darby, the significant ideas had been thoroughly discussed. Watson does a wonderful job documenting the richness of Anglican, Puritan, and Separatist thought in 16th and 17th century England, the American Colonies, France and Holland.

Fantastic, groundbreaking, vastly important work!! Watson sheds a new light on the correct origins of many elements of dispensationalism that pre-date John Nelson Darby. The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years. Nearly every theology textbook will have to be revised due to Dr. Watson's research. I had the pleasure of hearing him lecture on this topic recently and was impressed. I'm still reading the book, but it is groundbreaking!

Dan Bensky is a graduate of the Macau Institute of Chinese Medicine (Oriental Medicine Diploma, 1975), University of Michigan (B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature, 1978), Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Doctor of Osteopathy, 1982), and the University of Washington (M.A. in Classical Chinese, 1996). He is co-author of the companion volumes Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica and Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies and co-translated and edited Acupuncture: A Comprehensive Text. Dr. Bensky is in private medical practice in Seattle, and is a director of the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine.

Randall Barolet is a graduate of Cornell University (B.S. in Envirnomental Engineering, 1972), New England School of Acupuncture (Diploma, 1978), Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Advanced International Acupuncture Course (Certificate, 1983), California Acupuncture College (Doctor of Oriental Medicine, 1986), and the Professional Course of the National Center for Homeopathy (1989). He apprenticed as a dowser and homeopath (1986-90), and attended the School of Energy Mastery (1993-94) where he worked as a writer and energy healer. He is currently in private practice in Northern California, and is a visiting scholar and guest lecturer at the Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine.

Favorite herb text. Wouldn't trade it.

I wouldn't trade this book. It is my favorite herb text and I love both this edition and the quality of "used" that I got it in.

This edition has yellowish-colored pages, fewer in number- which yields fewer formulas listed whereas the newer edition has more formulas listed in a thicker book with bright white pages.

The yellowish pages make it much easier to read and is less harsh on the eyes. I am also very fortunate that the previous owner underlined some key text for the formulas required for the board exams. In the world of Harry Potter, its kind of like having the Half-Blood Prince's potions book ;)

Resource for TCM Formulas

This is a good reference for TCM students. This book is NOT for Western Herbalists. I am a TCM student and have found this book to be helpful. However, I am not certified. I find this book to be a little bit above my head at this point. I hope in time as I get more familiar with formulations that it will make much more sense to me. If you are to the point of making your own formulations then this book would probably be invaluable. I'm just not quite there, yet.

The only thing about this book that would make it more useful to me is to have it organized into formulations for patterns of disharmony, but I think that is because I still don't know what I'm doing. User inadequacy vs. book inadequacy.

Within each chapter there are numerous formulas listed to help pinpoint the specific imbalance. Each formula lists the recipe and the amount of each herb to be used in grams. Following the recipe describes how that particular formula works; and the actions of the herbs when combined. There are variations to "tweak" the formula if other conditions exist. This is an extensive book (562 pgs.) It is approximately 8" x 12" and 2+" thick.

There are Comparative tables dispersed throughout so you can more easily pick the appropriate formula before reading the action of all the formulas in that section.

There are cross references for Pinyin-English Reference of Actions, Cross Reference of Formula Names, Japanese-English Cross Reference of Formula Names, Pinyin-English Cross Reference of Formula Names, Formulary for Symptoms and Disorders, and Guide to Pinyin Pronunciation, Glossary of Technical Terms.

Overall a very good book. I sort of feel bad rating it because I think that the lack is due to my lack of knowledge vs. the lack in the book.

The best Chinese medicine formula book. Packed with research, notes, substitutions, and everything else one needs to know about Chinese herbal formulas. While all TCM students should have a copy of this book, they should also find another study vehicle. Trying to study from this book is like trying to learn English from a dictionary

So often, patients have no idea why they have brought a certain illness into their lives. Heal Your Body A-Z is a small, easy to use reference book which explains our physical illnesses in a brand new spiritual or metaphysical light.
Each entry shows a problem, its probable mental or psychological cause, and a helpful affirmation for correction. We can then reflect or meditate in the suggested direction and eventually change our thought patterns or heal our faulty beliefs.
The book covers many specific symptoms (like anxiety, constipation, overweight, fainting); some illnesses (like AIDS, lupus, diabetes, cataracts, ulcers, arthritis); and parts of the body (like face, lower back, joints, wrists, and sinuses). This book is an invaluable reference my family has used for many years now. My children have grown up going to this book to look up the "good words" to help them get over many physical issues that come in day to day life. I like to keep a copy handy all over the house. Steve N.G. Howell is a Research Associate of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory in Stinson Beach, California.
Sophie Webb has been drawing and studying birds most of her life. She is also a Research Associate at the Point Reyes Observatory.

The best field guide to date anywhere!

After reading this guide almost cover to cover, and field testing it in several locations in the guide area, I believe that this may very well be the best bird guide that has ever been written for a geographical area. The book is quite large (23.3 x 14.3 x 4.4 cm) and heavy (about 3 lbs), with 71 color plates sandwiched between over 850 pages of text. In spite of it being a bit cumbersome in the field, it is an essential resource that should always be close at hand when studying birds of this region.
The introduction is a lengthy 90 pages that includes a wealth of information such as geography, climate, ornithological history, conservation efforts per country, taxonomy, and an excellent outline of the species accounts which includes a bird topography page and a glossary for looking up words like heterodactyl or vermiculations. It can not be overstated that all of this is worth reading for a greater understanding of the species' descriptions.
The species accounts are packed with information and written in a easily accessed style. The accounts are taxonomically organized and preceding every taxonomic order, family and large genus is an introduction concerning their identification and habits. Every species is named by its American name, latin name, and its Spanish name. I have found the Spanish names to be almost worthless since they are so regional, but I am glad to see that Howell has made an attempt at standardizing them. All the species identification pieces are well written with sexual and age differences given lots of space. I particularly like the voice sections where he writes out in letters how he hears the songs and calls. There are some songs and calls of resident birds that he has omitted, but it would take up too much space to include all the calls. And, of course, there are many calls that he has written that I hear differently which is to be expected when dealing with sounds. The habitat and habits section informs as to where one is likely to find a certain species and to what it might be doing. Nidification is also covered in this section. The similar species section is excellent for differentiating between look-alikes. And the status and distribution section tells you how rare or common a species is in the geographical areas it inhabits. Elevational limits are also given here. This section is aided greatly by the superb range maps which accompany most species. They delimit summer and winter ranges as well as showing migratory pathways. Vagrants and isolated breeding colony locations are shown with an asterisk or dot respectively. The notes section at the end gives overall ranges and may inform of a name or taxonomic change that Howell made that was not recognized by the AOU at the time of printing.
The 71 plates were all expertly drawn by Sophie Webb illustrating mainly the species that occur in the guide region, but not in the U.S. There are several North American species included, however, for the sake of comparison. I particularly like the plates for showing age, sex and regional differences within a species. I also find it very helpful having species such as raptors and parrots depicted perched and in flight. Facing the plates are the bird names and short descriptions that should be sufficent for most identifications.
With nearly 26 pages of bibliography and 74 months of field work by the author and artist, this is an extremely well researched field guide. Even so, during my 6 mos. of travelling in this region, I have discovered many birds in places where they have never been seen before or seen only once or twice prior. Without the rangemaps in this field guide though I probably would not have realized that a Sandwich Tern is unheard of on a land-locked lake in the middle of Guatemala. And thus, I would not have known to document it. This field guide is not meant to be the final chapter in Middle American ornithology. In fact, it shows what gaps still exist in our knowledge of the birds in this region and allows us to start filling them in.

Best Neotropical Field Guide - Hands down!

I will be brief - I find this to be the best field guide to the birds of any neotropical region currently available, and I pretty much have studied them all on depth! The only guides that come close to this level of usefulness are Hilty's Columbia field guide and the new Ridgely/Greenfield Ecuador 2 volume set. This book has excellent, seasonally specific range maps, and illustrates many plumage variations. I am astonished to read other reviews in which this book is considered cumbersome, because all too often smaller, lighter books sacrifice completness of information and thoroughness, which compromises their usefulness. True, it's a hefty volume, but it treats a complex avifauna without sacrificing necessary information. The other criticism I was surprised by was that the pictures were too "cartoonlike"; I have found these plates to be some of the most useful in the field, for they emphasize key characteristics with clarity. In the field, simplicity is far more practical than overly-detailed artwork which may be more lifelike, but blurs the differences between species. Anyway, praise for Howell! May this volume set an example for future field guides throughout Latin America!

A very useful and informative guide, even for a beginner!

When I first received this book, I was overwhelmed by its size and weight - it is bigger than the typical field guide. However, after using it for one week in Mexico I was won over. It contains a wealth of useful well-organized info, about each species, plus plates and drawings which are both beautiful and carefully accurate. I found myself reading in it extensively nearly every evening, just for pleasure. Helpful tip: supplement it with a standard North American field guide. Common NA species which occur in Mexico and Central America are not always pictured in plates or drawings, though they are clearly described.

"Too Smart City" employs city furniture as enforcers: a bench ejects a sitter who sits too long, a sign displays the latest legal codes and warns passersby against transgression, and a trashcan throws back the wrong kind of trash. "Amphibious Architecture" uses underwater sensors and lights to create a human-fish-environment feedback loop; "Natural Fuse" uses a network of "electronically assisted" plants to encourage energy conservation; "Trash Track" follows smart-tagged garbage on its journey through the city's waste-management system; and "Breakout" uses wireless technology and portable infrastructure to make the entire city a collaborative workplace. These projects are described, documented, and illustrated by 100 images, most in color. Essays by prominent thinkers put the idea of the sentient city in theoretical context.

A Book Worthy of its Title and More.

This book is exactly what I hoped it would be according to the reviews on the books cover. In other words excellent. I concur with the books amazon review by Professor Hubisz, and would like to comment on the fact that Professor Povey is open to email communication if the reader has questions or comments regarding his or the reader's proposed solutions. While the book is framed for pre-university students, it is also a great reminder for those of us at the end of our career, who want to visit problems addressed in the past and want a refresher.
Even if the reader does not want to solve the problems themselves (particularly the 3 stars), going through how Professor approaches the problem is an eye-opener. I strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in physics, mathematics and the general nature of things.

Right at the level of an honors physics student in high school

Really entertaining and right at the level of an honors physics student at a competitive high school. I hope to try these out on some of my own physics students later this year. By the way, if you don't normally read introductions, you should take the time to read the one for this book. It's well worth it to find out about Professor Povey's amazing childhood.

superb puzzle book!

- the cover and inside pages are handsomely edited.
- the puzzles are great, enough variants included to challenge the avid puzzlist.
- his recollections of playing with firecrackers and the like as an inquisitive boy are wonderful - it reminded me of my own childhood.
- the promotional video of the book on Youtube, will convince you; make it a memorable gift to a son (or daughter) entering university physics.

My only complaint is that the answers follow the questions - so it's too easy to peak at the solutions - stupid editor strikes again - sigh...
