About the Author
Carol Crellin Tubbs, MA, OTR/L has been a practicing occupational therapist for 25 years. A graduate of the Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) Occupational Therapy program, she is currently an associate professor and assistant chair at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (Jackson, Mississippi) in the School of Health Related Professions. She has served as an Item Writer for NBCOT and practices on an as-needed basis in an outpatient clinic. She is involved with a community homeless program, and along with her students and other faculty, enjoys working with the population there on crafts and other productive activities. She is a lifetime crafter and believes in the healing and skill-building power of creative involvement.
Margaret Drake, PhD, OTR/L, ATR-BC, LPAT, FAOTA splits her time between writing historical novels, typing family documents (e.g., mother’s 1912 diary) to preserve them for future generations, volunteering for civic groups, and most recently, returning to professional work in long-term care on an “on-call” basis after a 5-year hiatus from practice following retirement from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Rare Resource

In our present culture that looks down its nose at handcraft, this book represents an unusual plea to return craft to its valuable place in occupational therapy. Though I am not an occupational therapist, I find great value in making useful items and incorporating creativity to make them beautiful. I believe children, in particular, need to be introduced to these activities and experience them as lifelong hobbies, if not careers. The authors of this book make their case with many recent scientific findings listed at the end of each chapter. The chapters are readable by a lay person and very down to earth. After making the case for using craft in therapy, the remaining chapters present individual crafts with plenty of ideas for simplifying them or making them more complex to meet the needs of individuals. I think this book would be useful to anyone who has a serious love of handwork and wants to share it in a variety of settings.

Another side to OT

For ten years I have worked in the arts and crafts portion of the Occupational Therapy Role. Daily, I see the restorative effects of the creative process, which give meaning to the lives of the elders, with whom I work. I see individuals who retain functions and tool use ability far longer than their counterparts. To me, the guy who can still use a hammer or a paintbrush is far more likely to continue feeding themselves...
Still over these few years I have watched as the latest breed of Occupational Therapists have smugly dismissed the "restorative" value of our persuits with our patients. Nursing administrators and funding sources such as Medicaid also question the thereputic value of our work. This book outlines proceedures for bringing documentable, theraputic approaches into our work. Thanks.

good, but I want more...

Useful in terms of reminding us OTs of our historic use of crafts, helpful ideas for documentation, justification and ways to use with different populations. I was hoping for more ideas about safety issues in acute psychitatric settings, since safety concerns are the among the most challenging in terms of what materials can be used with people who are suicidal, self harming and/or aggressive. Maybe I will write the book for that setting.
