Meyer tells the story of the mystery surrounding this explosion of animal life -- a mystery that has intensified, not only because the expected ancestors of these animals have not been found, but because scientists have learned more about what it takes to construct an animal. During the last half century, biologists have come to appreciate the central importance of biological information -- stored in DNA and elsewhere in cells -- to building animal forms.

Expanding on the compelling case he presented in his last book, Signature in the Cell, Meyer argues that the origin of this information, as well as other mysterious features of the Cambrian event, are best explained by intelligent design, rather than purely undirected evolutionary processes.

Expanding on the compelling case he presented in his last book, Signature in the Cell, Meyer argues that the theory of intelligent design—which holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection—is ultimately the best explanation for the origin of the Cambrian animals.

About the Author
Dr. Stephen C. Meyer received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in the philosophy of science. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. In 2004, Meyer ignited a firestorm of media and scientific controversy when a biology journal at the Smithsonian Institution published his peer-reviewed scientific article advancing intelligent design. Meyer has been featured on national television and radio programs, including The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CBS' Sunday Morning, NBC's Nightly News, ABC's World News, Good Morning America, Nightline, FOX News Live, and the Tavis Smiley show on PBS. He has also been featured in two New York Times front-page stories and has garnered attention in other top national media.

Derek Shetterlyhas worked extensively as an on-air radio talent, voice-over actor, and audiobook narrator. A graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a BA in radio and television, he lives in Oregon.

Another great thorough and logical read

Again, I am impressed by Meyer's approach, very Thomistic. Meyer's covers not only the topic but addresses numerous objections from critics as well as his own critique of the information he has discovered from other scientists in this vast field. His continued clarity in presenting the topic, his continued devotion to pursing the truth and asking the hard questions, even if he doesn't like the answers and his Thomistic manner in reviewing the evidence, stating his limits in his understanding and addressing his critics with dignity is remarkable. I deeply appreciate how he pursues the answer to his question: where did the information come from that all life, in fact the entire universe, is built upon? In my opinion, only fearful children are afraid of the ultimate answer to this question. As far as ID is concerned, Meyer's, again, explains that ID cannot provide the ultimate answer. The only answer ID can give is, complex specified information only comes from intelligent agents. Even dolphins fit into that category!! though they don't go to college, get advanced degrees and then deny the truth that's right in front of them. Meyer's very methodically manner in addressing this topic is so refreshing and so uplifting because he simply presents questions and as he presents his answers, he undergirds each answer with numerous references to work others have accomplished. He does not cover or hide what he doesn't know and he gives detailed explanations for everything he proposes, unlike many of his critics who simply object and push into obscurity their position without providing modern day now proof for their position concerning the creation of information found in the cell and in animal body plans.

A hilarious and touching coming-of-age story

Rita Mae Brown's novel "Rubyfruit Jungle" had me laughing out loud by the time I reached page 5. The book tells the life story of Molly Bolt, a poor girl who comes from rural Pennsylvania. Molly narrates the book, which follows her to her adolescent years in Florida and to her life as a struggling film student in New York. Along the way, Molly lives her life as a sexually liberated young lesbian.
Molly is a wonderful character: a witty, intelligent combination of artist and trickster. The book is full of humor and satirical outrageousness. Molly is surrounded by a colorful cast of characters, most notably her strong-willed mother. The narrative as a whole is well-structured, and Brown brings Molly's story to a very satisfying conclusion.
As funny as "Rubyfruit" is, it also has some relevant insights on a number of issues: mother-daughter relationships, anti-gay prejudice, sexism in academia, socioeconomic barriers, etc. Molly's desire to be a filmmaker is a key theme: she is a creative individual who wants to tell relevant stories about "real people," and not just impress some pompous group of cultural elites.
Brown's prose style is excellent: muscular, sexy, lively, humane, down-to-earth, and always enjoyable. For a good companion text, try Audre Lorde's "Zami," a moving narrative of African-American lesbian life.

Simple words for simple wording

I have been reading all of the customer reviews, and it seems that they have been missing the whole point of this book. By no means is this a "lesbian" book, or a book that completely focuses on dealing with "coming out". Nor should this book be read exclusively by lesbians. It's a book that simply follows a unique, strong young woman from when she was a kid to when she grows up into her 20's. Futhermore, the simple style is the essence of the book; more complicated wording would not embody the character of Molly nearly as well. The point is that Molly, who is sassy and a shamelessly cut-and-dry lesbian, does not think that things should be overanalyzed and obsessed over. She sees everything as obvious and blatant. Hence the simple language. It is an unapologetic, extremely funny book, and it is hard to put it down. It pulls you in from the beginning and continues to stay exciting throughout this girl's tumultuous life. In some ways she grows, but in others she never does compromise her gutsy, fiery self. I loved it.

Brilliant and beautiful

This is a well-written jewel. Rita Mae Brown's dialogue and plot is interesting from the very first page. The book tells the story of a lower-class girl growing up, her learning about sex and dealing with her own homosexuality, leaving home and starting a life of her own, college, city life, dating, etc. The reader identifies with Molly through all of her hardships and celebrates with her through her joyous relationships. This book deals with lesbianism in a very realistic manner, but at the same time could appeal to heterosexual women and men of all types. It is a coming of age story that is simplistic, yet incredibly ... can i say perfect. It's a very short book, and easy weekend read for pure enjoyment. I'd highly recommend this book - to anyone.

Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.

While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.

It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)

Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). A MUST HAVE BOOK.......LIFE CHANGING INFO

The Wisdom of Menopause is THE book on health for midlife women. It
covers everything, not just gynecological concerns! In addition to
describing the menopausal change and what to do about hormone
replacement, hot flashes, and insomnia, this book will tell you how to
keep your breasts and heart healthy, how to diet at midlife, and how
to keep your love life hot.

This is the third time I've bought this book. The Wisdom of Menopause
was first issued in 2001 and then reissued in 2006. Unlike a lot of
authors, when Dr. Northrup reissues a book she doesn't just change the
cover. She updates her books to include all the newest research and
medical choices you need to know about to be healthy in mind, body,
and spirit. This edition is no exception. She even explains how to get
through your midlife transition happier than you've ever been before.

The Wisdom of Menopause is HUGE. Each chapter is practically a book!
It quickly became my go-to reference book for health. This book is a
must-have for every woman's library! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!

Yes!

My therapist noticed I have been more weepy, cranky, tired, and fatter than usual. I mentioned that I'm very much nose-diving into Menopause and I am out of control. She recommended this book. Before I was out of the parking lot of her office, ordered it from my mobile device. The next day, This BIBLE shows up at my door! I spent about a week flipping through it, completely overwhelmed and unable to process that there is THIS MUCH information about the undoing of my hormones. I mostly just showed it to people in horror. "This is what's happening to me! I need a manual?!" Honestly, the tome really scared the crap out of me. When I was entering puberty, I got a little pink booklet, no more than 10 pages, and it was mostly illustration.

After a week of griping, I settled in and decided to read some of it. I was hooked. Dr. Northrup has done a ton of research and she covers every possible angle of this transition. Now I'm not as overwhelmed. I am more prepared and this Meno-thing is not going to be the end of me.I have already dog- eared pages that I return to over and over. Dr. Northrup not only gives you the science, she brings a great deal of humanity and personal enlightenment. (I recently picked up a smaller book, written by a male doctor. The tone was harsh compared to Dr. Northrup's approach.)

Don't expect to read it cover-to- cover. Read the first part, definitely, then review the Table of Contents and take what applies to your situation. This is the most complete and empathetic information I've seen so far. It is a big book. It has to be, she has a lot to teach. She shares the good news that (SPOILERS) we'll come through the other side more bad-ass and self assured than we imagined.

So, yes, I need this manual and I'll recommend it to all my sisters beginning this journey.

An unusual blend of eastern and western medicine

This is the craziest mix of solid medical information and alternative and metaphysical therapy views I have encountered. Although the in-depth breakdown of the latest research into the effects of menopause and menopause treatments on women's health are exactly what I was looking for, the strong belief the author shows in chakras, tarot reading, and ideas like blocked creative energy contributing to health issues such as fibroids, put me off. However, the very thorough discussion of hormone replacement therapy and its alternatives brought me back and is worth the price of the book and allowed me to tolerate the forays into the metaphysical.

good for the novice and the experienced designer

Even designers with a lot of experience need a dose of inspiration now and then, particularly when the project at hand is less than exciting. This book provides a ton of it. It's a particularly good book to flip through if you are over-thinking a project and need to get back to reality. At the same time, you can often find that much-needed kick-start when your deadline is approaching at a faster speed than any of your ideas. Some of the designs and layouts may seem simple and obvious, but I have found that it can be very helpful to be reminded that 'simpler is better' more often than not.

At the same time, novice designers and do-it-yourselfers will get a lot out of this book. As the first chapter says, this book is about designing by seeing, rather than by following any perceived hard and fast rules. The chapters on picking the perfect color and finding the right typeface follow along this line and are excellent. Letter-spacing (kerning) and other aspects of typography are given quite a bit of due in a few chapters, so beginners get a bit of guidance in an area that is becoming increasingly more neglected. Although this book presupposes a working knowledge of layout and design programs, it offers clear examples of why certain things work, along with simple ways to improve any layout.

Magnificent for marketers, writers, and non-"design" folks

There are jobs for which you want to hire a *real* artist or graphic designer, and then there are those barely artistic jobs that most people -- educated with the proper fundamentals -- could probably perform for themselves. You know, things like report covers, business cards and the like. Unfortunately lots of great ideas and content never make it into the world because the originators can't afford or can't personally create compelling design. Like it or not, good design sells. It signals value, credibility, and fitness to a purpose, activating a viewer's trigger to either engage further or move on.

Sure there are examples of ideas and products succeeding despite poor design, but they are the outliers. Why take a gamble on bad design, when the door is wide open to learn what works best? Before & After, How to Design Cool Stuff, gives you the tools and confidence to create all sorts of printed "stuff," for lack of a more descriptive term, that looks darn good. Furthermore, you know exactly why it looks good and can clearly articulate the reasons for your design decisions.

This, in turn, allows you to publish many more creative projects on your own if you don't happen to be a formally schooled artist (or can't justify hiring one). If you are fortunate enough to have other artists in your employ, this book makes you conversant in their language. When you can communicate your ideas to artistic staff without misunderstanding, you're much more likely to get what you want earlier in the design/development process. Hence, you save money, time, hurt feelings, and lots of the sturm and drang that can accompany collaborative creation.

In addition to the logos, CD cases and labels, business cards, brochures, report covers and interiors, and other example projects, the book provides solid explanation of how to use form, color, proportion, typography, and volume. No more "my gut tells me it looks right."

I felt like a whole new world opened up for me after reading this book, and I don't say that lightly. I've read a good number of the popular books on presentation and design, and this one is near the top. I recently got a message from Amazon offering to buy the book back from me. I smiled and thought, "They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands."

In other words, whether you're a jack-of-many trades with occasional design needs like myself, or a dedicated full-time designer, Before & After's How to Design Cool Stuff will become a prized (and well-used) addition to your bookcase.

Design without the B.S.

This is an excellent guide to design without all the B.S. John McWade explains both the basics and profound design truths in a very straightforward, articulate and easy to understand language. It's a great book that reminds even the most well seasoned creative designer of down to earth, timeless, design fundamentals. When self proclaimed elitists say things like "You just got to feel it... it's too profound... it can't be explained..." John McWade manages to put those incoherent thoughts into simple words, which can give even the most "ungifted" designer the means to improve and excel.

Almost every page is instantly applicable! His tips are practical and innovative. He doesn't bog his readers down with how to use the most sophisticated tools and methods in the Adobe suite... but he focuses on the ideas, principles and form of design rather than how to do it.

This should be the basic text book for all young designers!

CRITICISMS:
-All his designs share a very particular "clean" style, which stems from his strong design foundations, but I would've liked to see him incorporate a broader range of design styles.
-He doesn't go into deep detail about everything such as website design. This section feels rushed, or just slotted in there to say it's covered the topic. It covers only a particular type of websites.

Must read for software professionals

I treat my books harshly, highlighting important ideas and writing my observations and thoughts in the margins as I read, and my copy of SDLC 3.0 is marked up severely. This book presents a realistic and reasoned view of agile software delivery. Note how I use the term delivery and not just development - this book goes far beyond the software development life cycle to consider the full delivery life cycle. It in fact, it goes further to consider how to apply agile and lean concepts at the enterprise level.

If you're a software professional and truly serious about understanding your craft, then this book is a must read.

I Was Prepared To Dislike This Synthesis But...

Kennaley is obviously a brilliant man and he's delivered a wide-ranging, sometimes technical, mostly brilliant work. I have to admit I was prepared to dislike any attempt at a Lean / Agile synthesis with the Unified Process (UP) but, like the author, I'm a pragmatist at heart so he won me over about halfway through.

The bottom line is that software development practitioners are far better served by a hybrid of best practices than the sectarian dogma of purists driven by profit. There were lots of hmm and ah hah moments for me, such as:

- Debates over what is "Agile" and what is "Scrum-but" are silly and unhelpful; every methodology has to be adapted to context and situation.

- The Agile community is plagued by "a lack of diversity:" "What is needed is not homogeneity of thought, but rather...people having differing knowledge backgrounds" who are willing to challenge "the established dogma."

- The Agile community has been less than forthcoming about the challenges of political and economic realities on the ground, distributed teams, and scale. Solutions may be derived by "leveraging the entire field of modern software engineering practices." I was hoping the author would also address the challenge of estimating large, fixed scope programs but didn't find it.

There is also a helpful discussion on optimizing the length of iterations by project phase, risk, and complexity.

In the end, Kennaley seems to favor Lean with an appreciation of UP's emphasis on architecture and risk mitigation and Agile's focus on human factors.

Towards a "SDLC 3.0" is an ambitious undertaking; I recommend this book as an important step in the right direction.

An excellent summary of SDLC and directions for the future

When I first picked up SDLC 3.0, I was very interested in Mr. Kennaley's explanation of the various software development life cycles being used and how they could work together. With a perspective of "use what works" rather than the Scrum/XP/RUP/Lean/etc (pick your favorite) is the only way, Mr. Kennaley does an excellent job of explaining the various Agile methodologies, how to combine them, why waterfall doesn't work (if you are into mathematics, you will enjoy chapter 3, where he uses systems control theory to explain why Agile works and why waterfall does not) and then he looks forward to the next generation of SDLCs (hence the 3.0 title).

If you are looking for a book the explains the various Agile approaches without taking sides, as well as where things are going, this book is a great one for it.

At times, though, I felt that Mr. Kennaley could have delved deeper into some of the sections he painted with a broad brush. For example, while the diagrams are good (would have been nice for some of them to be bigger though) the explanations, at times, seem lacking. The last chapter, chapter 9, the one that paints the road ahead, seemed not to wrap the story enough. Hence four and not five stars.

These are minor issues in comparison to the work Mr. Kennaley has done in pulling all these methodologies together and pointing the way forward.

Igor Krupnik is a cultural anthropologist and curator of the Arctic and Northern Ethnology collections at the Department of Anthropology in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Michael Chlenov is professor at the Maimonides State Jewish Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

For scholars, students or just anyone who is interested in the life of Yup'ik people, their history, social organization and cultural traditions, this is a solid basic text. The author, well-known expert on the region, portrays social changes, which occurred in the Bering region in the 20th century, and shows their implications for today.
