The City in Slang: New York Life and Popular Speech, by Irving Lewis Allen

The American urban scene, and in particular New York's, has given us a rich cultural legacy of slang words and phrases, a bonanza of popular speech. Hot dog, rush hour, butter-and-egg man, gold digger, shyster, buttinsky, smart aleck, sidewalk superintendent, yellow journalism, breadline, straphanger, tar beach, the Tenderloin, the Great White Way, to do a Brodie--these are just a few of the hundreds of popular words and phrases that were born or took on new meaning in the streets of New York.
In The City in Slang, Irving Lewis Allen traces this flowering of popular expressions that accompanied the emergence of the New York metropolis from the early nineteenth century down to the present. This unique account of the cultural and social history of America's greatest city provides in effect a lexicon of popular speech about city life. With many stories Allen shows how this vocabulary arose from city streets, often interplaying with vaudeville, radio, movies, comics, and the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley.
Some terms of great pertinence to city people today have unexpectedly old pedigrees. Rush hour was coined by 1890, for instance, and rubberneck dates to the late 1890s and became popular in New York to describe the busloads of tourists who craned their necks to see the tall buildings and the sights of the Bowery and Chinatown. The Big Apple itself (since 1971 the official nickname of New York) appeared in the 1920s, though first in reference to the city's top racetracks and to Broadway bookings as pinnacles of professional endeavor. Allen also tells fascinating stories behind once-popular slang that is no longer in use. Spielers, for example, were the little girls in tenement districts who danced ecstatically on the sidewalks to the music of the hurdy-gurdy men and, when they were old enough, frequented the dance halls of the Lower East Side.
Following the trail of these words and phrases into the city's East Side, West Side, and all around the town, from Harlem to Wall Street, and into the haunts of its high and low life, The City in Slang is a fascinating look at the rich cultural heritage of language about city life.

Review
"A lively piece of popular scholarship."--The New Yorker

"Mr. Allen has written a 'book on words about the city' that makes a provocative cultural history. Like Whitman, who is the patron saint of the volume and whose words open each chapter, 'Mr. Allen is 'through Manhattan's streets...walking, these things gathering."--New York Times

"An unusual and interesting cultural history of urban life....A readable study of interest to urban and cultural historians and linguists as well as a general audience."--Publishers Weekly

"Charmingly written."--Contemporary Sociology

23 Skiddoo!
By Rocco Dormarunno
Dere has been a lot written about the Noo Yawk accent, but Professon Irving Allen's "The City in Slang: New York Life and Popular Speech" is one of the first that I know to tackle the individual phrases and words that emerged from Gotham.
Naturally, a combination of factors contributed to the genesis of slang in New York, a slang which would spread across the nation. First, because New York has always been such a dynamic city, constantly in change, constantly experimenting, new ideas have always occurred here first and faster. Logically, New Yorkers would create the informal vocabulary accompanying these innovations. Second, because the city was so welcoming of immigrants, the words they brought over, and the words that reflected their cultures, were the natural offspring. Professor Allen touches upon these and other factors but I don't want you to think the book is as dry as I'm making it sound. To the native New Yorker or to anyone outside, "The City in Slang: New York Life and Popular Speech" is a light-hearted, enjoyable catalog of all those terms and their unique (and sometimes surprising) origins. Why is a police van called a "paddy wagon"? Find out how the word "mooch" came about. Discover the real origin of the term "rubbernecker"--it's not what you think! This is a thoroughly witty and informative book--with several illustrations--that will have you thinking in slang before you know it!

Wright on: The star pieces of Americas greatest architect   A building by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is at once unmistakably individual, and evocative of an entire era. Notable for their exceptional understanding of an organic environment, as well as for their use of steel and glass to revolutionize the interface of indoor and outdoor, Wright’s designs helped announce the age of modernity, as much as they secured his own name in the annals of architectural genius.

This meticulous compilation from TASCHEN’s previous three-volume monograph assembles the most important works from Wright’s extensive, paradigm-shifting oeuvre into one authoritative and accessibly priced overview of America's most famous architect. Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, the collection spans the length and breadth of Wright’s projects, both realized and unrealized, from his early Prairie Houses, through the Usonian concept home, epitomized by Fallingwater, the Tokyo years, his progressive “living architecture” buildings, right through to later schemes like the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and fantastic visions for a better tomorrow in the “living city.”

Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who served as Wright’s apprentice during the 1950s, discusses recent research on Wright and gives his own insights on these game-changing buildings.   Text in English, French, and German

Superb Book on America's Greatest Architect - Highly Recommended
By Architect FAIA
This is a superb book on America's Greatest Architect. As an Architect and Owner of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, I am very knowledgeable of FLW and I purchase every serious book published one FLW and his work. This wonderful book is loaded with superb photographs, superb drawings, many of which that have never been published before. Brooks Pfeiffer is a former Taliesin Apprentice and has had key responsibility for the operation of Talesin West. He has access to full depth of the FLW Archives and is incredibly knowledgeable of them. His other books on FLW are also well written and incredibly insightful. As an Architect living in a wonderful 1901 FLW House, I highly recommend this book.

A perfect overview of Frank Lloyd Wright's works
By G. E. Bertram
Initially, I was very nervous about getting this, as I already had a book cover FLW's career over all and plenty of other specialty books on his architecture, but I was pleasantly surprised by how through this book is. It covers more than the Robert McCarter volume from several decade ago and touches on the many facets of his career, and supporting it with a rich assemblage of original drawings and floorplans, and with new and old photography. The size of the book is large but far more easy to handle than the even larger "complete works."

Beautiful Book
By Robert Sinton
Loved Wright's work forever, it's still relevant today in the era of track homes, suburban sprawl, and the ever-spreading sameness that seems to plague my eyeballs. His designs are still better than 90% of the modern architects out there. He captures that Art Deco meets the future vibe perfectly. Some lovely sketches in here too that I'd never seen.

A quirky collection of songs.
By Paul Gasper
If you are like me and already have most of Barbra's sheet music, have a look at what's in this book. This collection is by no means a greatest hits collection. There's no "People" or "Evergreen". But if you have collected other Streisand books, you'll have several copies of those songs already. No, it's the slightly more quirky songs that are in this book. And that's why I love it.
From the very first album, we have "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" and "Keepin' out of of Mischief". There's "free again" and it's French translation (non, c'est risen) from Colour Me Barbra and the French album. I love "Great Day" from Funny Lady,
There are 20 songs by Barbra, some of which I have looked for years to find the sheet music to. If you just want her hits, buy the music to "the Collection". This is for the dedicated fan.

I Love Norvel Hayes.
By jch
Also I am getting into smaller books. I am liking books that can be read in one or two settings. This one is about 90 pages and it doesn't disappoint. It all begins with Faith . . .surprise, surprise. Hayes touches on the Gifts of the Spirit and things that choke off God's blessing system. Hates being the author, we get some healing. . . .I don't know why . . .

God has a plan, and it is to BLESS His kids!!!!

I have always found Norvel Hayes able to speak to my mts, and allow me to understand how to pray for victory. I have many of his pocket books from decades ago and I take those out in times of difficulty and reread them. There is victory in praying the WORD, and aligning your perspective to a heavenly one.

Sweet Land Stories, by E. L. Doctorow

One of America’s premier writers, the bestselling author of Ragtime, Billy Bathgate, The Book of Daniel, and World’s Fair turns his astonishing narrative powers to the short story in five dazzling explorations of who we are as a people and how we live.

Ranging over the American continent from Alaska to Washington, D.C., these superb short works are crafted with all the weight and resonance of the novels for which E. L. Doctorow is famous. You will find yourself set down in a mysterious redbrick townhouse in rural Illinois (“A House on the Plains”), working things out with a baby-kidnapping couple in California (“Baby Wilson”), living on a religious-cult commune in Kansas (“Walter John Harmon”), and sharing the heartrending cross-country journey of a young woman navigating her way through three bad marriages to a kind of bruised but resolute independence (“Jolene: A Life”). And in the stunning “Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden,” you will witness a special agent of the FBI finding himself at a personal crossroads while investigating a grave breach of White House security.

Two of these stories have already won awards as the best fiction of the year published in American periodicals, and two have been chosen for annual best-story anthologies.
Composed in a variety of moods and voices, these remarkable portrayals of the American spiritual landscape show a modern master at the height of his powers.

From Publishers Weekly
As one might expect of Doctorow, the title is ironic. In settings that range across the U.S., most of the alienated characters in the five stories here find life anything but sweet as they struggle to surmount the stigmas of poverty, lack of education and their instincts to gamble against the odds. Three of the male protagonists are passive and amoral; attempting to defend their irrational behavior, each reminds himself that he is not stupid. All of them€"a young grifter who dutifully abets his mother's murderous greed on a farm near Chicago ("A House on the Plains"); a love-besotted accessory to a kidnapping in California (the slyly humorous "Baby Wilson"); and a cuckolded member of a religious cult commune in Kansas ("Walter John Harmon")€"share a capacity for self-delusion and self-preservation. The two female protagonists attempt to alter fate and find themselves buffeted by the inescapable force of male power. The protagonist of "Jolene: A Life" is forced into a cross-country hegira in pursuit of a sweet land where she won't be an outsider. Scared and desperate despite her cool facade, Jolene becomes a victim in every relationship. If the story's denouement veers too close to soap opera, Doctorow's empathetic character portrayal redeems the plot twists. The most riveting narrative, "Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden," describes a presidential administration that is secretive, arrogant and contemptuous of ordinary citizens. In this knowing treatment of the cynical abuse of power, Doctorow uses the spare, laconic style endemic to thrillers and builds suspense with sure strokes. Boring like a laser into the failures of the American dream, he captures the resilience of those who won't accept defeat.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Each critic professes great respect for Doctorow, who, at age 73 and many awards later, has earned it. However, there the split begins. Many critics hail these stories, four of which were published previously in The New Yorker, as an achievement that perfectly captures the American nation’s mood, its aberrant characters, and dark underbelly. But others dismiss the book as a slim, shallow effort that does not live up to Doctorow’s past work. Common complaints? “A House on the Plains” doesn’t fit in with the other four stories, and “Child, Found Dead in the Rose Garden,” which could have been a powerful political piece, doesn’t live up to its promise.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Doctorow is at once a supremely entertaining storyteller and a profound writer of conscience, and he forges an extraordinarily potent blend of artistry, compassion, and covert outrage in his new short story collection, the first since the indelible Lives of the Poets (1984). Here are five perfectly honed and sharp-edged stories about faith, love, and the abuse of power. Five ambushing and hair-raising tales featuring intensely compelling characters and impossible situations that unveil key paradoxes intrinsic to American society. Set in the horse-and-buggy era, "A House on the Plains" charts the adventures of an enterprising woman and her grown son, who reluctantly leaves Chicago to accompany her on what turns out to be a diabolical mission in a small Illinois town. The criminal mind fascinates Doctorow, as does the law and its failings, and men's cruelty toward women, tragic realities he sure-handedly explores to powerful effect in "Jolene: A Life," a classic hard-luck, white-trash tale with universal implications. Doctorow boldly takes on the enigma of religious cults in the eerie "Walter John Harmon," and in the scorching story, "Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden," he shrewdly and devastatingly uncloaks the workings of an utterly corrupt White House, and the drastic consequences of such a colossal betrayal. At base, what Doctorow's unique and electrifying stories grapple with is our longing to trust authority and our realization that, instead, we must always question it. Donna Seaman

Doctorow Delivers Gripping Stories about the Ordinary Man
By Grady Harp
SWEET LAND STORIES is another superlative venture for E.L. Doctorow, one of the very finest writers in the country. Though known best for his larger tomes that mingle history and fiction as well as anyone has ever done, this small book of five stories reveals a master in creating characters and stories in a few pages that become indelible in the reader's mind. In his hands the most apparently simple settings become backdrops for complex, extensive tapestries that reveal how the 'little man/woman' can be pitched and tossed into the most bizarre tangle of events and yet somehow survive. In a time when many of us worry about the spiritual vacuum of life in the 21st Century, when the individual seems buried in the media pile of homogenation, look to Doctorow's fertile mind to remember and perhaps redefine the role of the Everyman. These stories are varied and extraordinarily well written: 'A House on the Plains' seems to be a tale of survival found in fleeing an urban center to a new life for a family on the plains, only to become a wholly different surprising macabre tale in the end: 'Baby Wilson' focuses on a couple who walk out a hospital with someone else's baby, flee, and watch their lives mutate; 'Walter John Harmon' concerns a community of brainwashed folk under the influence of a Spiritual Leader and the consequences of manipulation in the religion realm; 'Jolene: A Life' follows the course of an abused orphan through the country as she moves from one bad husband to the next - holding our hearts in her hand; 'Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden' is Doctorow's indictment of the credibility gap in the White House management of Intelligence sharing - a different and terrifying aside on terrorism so much in focus today. Doctorow tells these stories with elegant prose, terse and delicate economy, and once again proves he can spin a yarn better than most writers active today. A Brilliant Collection!

Doctorow's Sweet Land
By Robin Friedman
I read and enjoyed Doctorow's current historical novel of Sherman's march, "The March," and wanted to read more. Doctorow's "Sweet Land Stories" (2004) lacks the sweep of his Civil War novel. But it excells in its picture of American down-and-outers, loners, losers, grifters, and wanderers. It includes short but unforgettable scenes of a varied and almost timeless American, in rural Illinois, Chicago, Alaska, a religious commune, Las Vegas, and elsewhere.

The book consists of five short stories, four of which appeared initially in the New Yorker while the fifth story, "Child, Dead in the Rose Garden" appeared first in the Virginia Quarterly Review. Each of the stories is faced-paced, draws the reader into the action, and can be read easily in a single sitting. The stories reminded me of Hubert Selby's "Last Exit to Brooklyn" and of the novels of Charles Bukowski without their rawness. Doctorow's is the voice of a polished literary artist.

Three of the stories are told in the first person by male narrators. The first story "A House on the Plains" is recounted by Earle and tells of his conniving and murderous mother on a small farm in Illinois. For all the brutality and irony of the story, the characters come alive sympathetically. "Baby Wilson" is told in the voice of a young man with nowhere particular to go whose girlfriend has kidnapped a baby claiming it is the couple's. We are treated to a picturesque ride through dusty roads and small towns as the two loners truly become a couple and parents as well as they struggle to resolve the situation.

"Walter John Harmon" tells the story of its namesake, a former garage mechanic and thief, and current alcoholic and philanderer, who becomes the leader of a religious commune. But the narrator is an attorney who has given up a staid if successful law practice and, with his wife Betty has joined the commune. The tone of the story is set by its first sentence: "When Betty told me she would go that night to Walter John Harmon, I didn't think I reacted." Doctorow shows the credulous, unresolved needs of many people, including highly educated individuals, for belief and spiritual support, as the narrator is cuckolded by Walter John Harmon who runs off with Betty and abandons the commune to its fate.

The story "Jolene:A Life" tells of a young woman with three bad marriages and other affairs who works through a life of trouble and attains a degree of peace at the end. This is a tawdry story with tawdry scenes, tattoo parlors, topless bars, sexual abuse, gangster-style killings, convincingly portrayed. Jolene struggles throughout all this to develop her talent as an artist.

The final story, "Child Dead, in the Rose Garden" seems to me weaker than the others in that it is too overtly political. I had the same problem with Doctorow's "The Book of Daniel" which is a fictionalized account of the Rosenbergs. This story also differs from its companions in that the protagonist is not a down-and-outer but a respectable person in a responsible job. The story is about the adventures of a retired special agent named B.W. Molloy who, over official resistance, solves a mystery about how the body of a dead child was found in the White House Rose Garden and in the process learns a good deal about himself.

Doctorow has made his reputation, and deservedly so, as a writer of American historical fiction. This book is smaller in scope than novels such as "The March" but perhaps digs deeper into the hearts of its characters. This book together with Doctorow's difficult modern novel "City of God" which to me shows the promise of a secular, open America, are thoughtful, spiritual works which I have greatly enjoyed.

Gripping Tales of Life on the Fringes
By Donald Mitchell
Short stories are quite a challenge. You have to establish characters, mood, setting, conflict and context quickly. Then you have to move forward surely to your target with little wasted effort. If you accomplish all that, you only succeed if the story teaches you something that you find compelling. By those standards, the five stories in Sweet Land Stories are a tour de force.

I was surprised to find this because I find Mr. Doctorow's novels to move in a very leisurely pace. But here, that pace turns into just the right speed.

What the stories have in common is that you enter into worlds that operate at the fringes of society rather than near their center. So your characters have different problems than you and I think about every day. They also have unique solutions to their problems. The shift in focus is so complete that it's almost like reading science fiction. But the shift has a tether back to our lives . . . a tether that makes the lessons universal for us all. It's very impressive.

In the first story, A House on the Plains, we have an attractive mother and her son who find themselves living on a farm they don't know how to operate after the mother's husband died in Chicago. The mother likes men. What they do next will surprise you with its chilling elements. The story is told from the perspective of the son which makes it quite macabre. What is our responsibility to our parents . . . and to our fellow humans?

Baby Wilson will haunt you. A young woman decides to kidnap a baby. She's convinced the baby is hers. How will her boyfriend deal with this? You will find yourself in the shoes of the boyfriend as you share his dilemma. How do you protect the baby and your girlfriend?

Walter John Harmon takes you deeply into the spiritual life of a cult whose messianic leader is under siege. How will the challenges of that siege affect the leader and the cult? You experience the story from the perspective of a cult member who is a lawyer trying to protect the cult. The story raises fine questions about self-deception that we all practice.

Jolene: A Life is a very sad story. Born with beauty but few other advantages, Jolene floats like a wood chip atop the roiling waters of life. As her beauty is used up, she finds herself falling below the water line. And ultimately, she finds out what it is to love and lose. You see life as Jolene sees it.

Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden is a cynical look at the ethics of powerful politicians and business people that will leave you gasping with its pain. You see this from the perspective of an investigator into the unexplained death of a child in the White House's Rose Garden.

I don't remember a more compelling set of short stories written since the turn of the century. Don't miss them!

Tragedy and Second Chances
By A Customer
From back of the book: "For years Tanya had dreamed of the day she'd be free, and able to be with the young son for whom she'd sacrificed everything. Antonio was her baby, her entire reason for living.
Ramon had known that someday, some way, his adopted son's mother would return. For Antonio, he'd tried to build a secure and loving home. But for Tanya, his deep brown eyes spoke of passion, not just security...life, not just existence. Only he could give her back her son, but could she find the courage to accept everything else he offered?"
The story begins with a tragedy: Tanya Bishop shot and killed her drunken, abusive husband and was sent to prison for murder. Eleven years later, she returned to claim the baby son, Antonio, that she'd left behind. In the intervening years, Antonio has been raised by his father's cousin, Ramon Quezada. Now, Tanya faces the concern of how her son will accept her as well as her growing awareness and attraction to Ramon.
Letters that Tanya wrote to her son during her imprisonment are interspersed throughout the story, and provide a loving insight into Tanya, her life and the pain of not being with her son. This is a touching story that tugs on the heart strings as we watch Tanya become reacquainted with her son - first as a stranger (the new cook) and then her acceptance by Antonio as he realizes that she is his mother. Well written and highly recommended!

Thoughtful reading
By Suzanne
I admit to reading as many of this authors books on kindle as I have been able to get my hands on. And I recommend all her books. She is a real storyteller. Now, this book was very thought provoking and really made me think. The lead character is truly a victim but she is not laid low, she fights her way back with grace and of course, the love of a good man. This is a gritty, emotional, romance, with a lot of heart. It describes how abuse and violence can lead anyone to do unthinkable things, it's about a woman on her own, a woman not helped by the so called safety nets put up by society. Tugs on the heart strings, a very good read.

Relieved!
By Buneesa K. Terry
I've been searching for more books written by one of my favorite authors, Barbara O'Neal, and was surprised to find that she has written piles of books as Barbara Samuel, long before her most recent (and amazingly good) novels. So I ordered The Last Chance Ranch on my Kindle and loved it. I live in New Mexico and so frequently authors fail to hit the mark by over-romanticizing the location and its people, but Samuel (O'Neal) is obviously one of us. The characters are believable and their conflicts and resolutions aren't over-simplified. I found myself crying for these characters, both in sorrow and in joy. I consider myself a serious literature reader, but these books are a great read and very well done.

The Table Of Contents Tells the Whole Story!
By Dawn Devine
I'm going to start with a disclaimer, I wrote one of the articles in the Belly Dance Reader, but I'm not here to toot my own horn. Rather, I'd like to share with you my delight and amazement at the quality and scope of this book. I just got my copy, and it occurs to me that from the description above, you can't really make the most informed decision about purchasing The Belly Dance Reader. But rather than tell you how much I love it, I thought I would give you something even better - the Table of Contents! Just one quick skim, and you will see that this book has an amazing collection of authors from academics to working professionals, this book has a little something-something for every belly dance enthusiast. I'm enjoying reading this collection! Happy Costuming! Dawn Devine ~ Davina (Author of Embellished Bras and Costuming from the Hip)

A good collection of articles by dancers who know their stuff!
By Maura Enright
The book contains lots of what I wanted, which is, research and strong opinions by folks who have earned the right to have an opinion. Too many of the existing belly dance magazines are little more than belly-dance versions of People magazine, predictably featuring the dancer-du-jour and then filling the rest of the pages with bits of diluted information and rambling articles on topics that have been recycled for decades. This book is more like the late lamented Habibi and Arabesque magazines, capturing the insights and enthusiasms of articulate people who are Names in their field. You won't be bored. I suggest you buy it.

Review for "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of Gilded Serpent

For anyone at all interested in the art of belly dance, "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of the Gilded Serpent, will enthuse and educate. Its collection of articles, written in part, by many Bay Area dancers, are geared towards the novice, but has valuable insight for both advanced and professionals as well. It offers a variety of articles addressing belly dance basics, such as costuming, make up, and working with a live band, to more educative topics, such as, origins and styles of belly dance, their evolutions, and important discussions about depicting cultures and ethnic groups accurately. Most of the articles are very accessible to the average reader via first person accounts, but this great source also easily forays into a more collegiate realm. With little in the way of media coverage for belly dance, this book is a highly valuable resource. One can gain great knowledge from another dancer's experiences, and that is one of the many great tools offered here. With this in mind, anything written by Najia Marlyz is a delight, and in this reader she has two fabulous articles. "Welcome to Belly Dance!", by Marlyz opens the discussion of belly dance and provides a compelling overview of the subject. Her approach is serious yet comedic, and this I find refreshing. Her article "Are the Stars Out Tonight" is a no no nonsense discussion of music for your "gig", as well as your expectations as a dancer, (will you be paid to dance in the background, or are you a star performer?) and how to achieve your goals.
The article "The Teacher-Student Relationship, A Psychological Point of View", helps us recognize good and bad teacher-student relationships and discusses the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which to sum it up, teaches "just a little bit beyond what the student can already do" so that they may one day be autonomous in their dance careers. As a dancer who's taken classes from many teachers, it is true that finding the best fit will ensure growth in your dance. You want to be praised for your abilities, but also pushed to to better, or you will not feel excited about what you are learning. Conversely, having to be a clone of your teacher only ends in disharmoney. Another poignant article entitled "It Ain't Easy Being the Crone" will strike a chord with many. It discusses one woman journey as a praised dancer to one who has been forgotten. I think that the desire to be a beloved dancer is a dream of many, whether you are professional or not and it was touching to read about this personal experience. In addition to figuring the accuracy, reliability, and validity of source material,"Reading Like a Researcher" discusses how dancers passionate about their art can go beyond dance training and learn"about the cultures, history and evolution of their art...". An article by Brigid Kelly discusses "Latent Orientalism" a phrase coined by Palestinian critic Edward Said in 1978, that reveals how the West's historical "othering" of Arab cultures "...can be used to feed the racism at the discourse's heart". This is an eye-opening article that must be read! The fabulous article by Princess Farhana offers a valuable discussion of vintage costumes and their care. Many more articles worth reading are to be found within this well-organized three-hundred page reader that will indulge, inspire and educate you about the art and culture of belly dance in America and beyond.
