I'm torn

I'm not quite sure whether to give this 4 or 5 stars and here is why:

5 Stars: Because it is a good tie-in and well worded
4 Stars: Because it is not worth the price paid

I'm going to give it 4 stars NOT because the writing is poor, but because the "return on value" isn't quite right.

I LOVED Metro 2033 and, after finishing it, was hungry to dive back into the world. So when I saw The Gospel According to Artyom, I excitedly purchased it. Well, in a sentence, the book is more like a chapter and the value gained was not worth the price.

While I appreciate the insight the chapter offers, I don't feel like it was anything I wasn't already going to find out in the next book or nothing my imagination couldn't have pieced together. I understand that Metro 2033 and Metro 2034 were both written and completed some time ago, but this reads like a shaky tie-in to help resolve a few plot holes. In other words, it would be similar to Tolkien writing a 50 page story on why Gandalf didn't just have the Eagles drop the ring into Mt Doom, five years after the Lord of the Rings release, in order to justify Frodo's journey. Plus, if you are really curious, I'm sure a quick Google search will tell you what happens in this chapter. It really isn't worth the price paid for.

Since Metro 2034 has yet to hit the Kindle store, I'll be waiting to see if this little filler was really worth it, but until then, you may want to hold off until 2034 comes out.

Worth a Read

I picked this up because I had just finished Metro 2033 and was dying for more. I'm a big fan of the series and 2034 has not yet been translated into English, and Last Light is still at least a month away. The whole thing is pretty short, not even the length of a chapter from 2033, but it intrigued me. (at least the ending did) Without spoiling anything, I can't wait to see how they handle the plot they've revealed here with Last Light, as it's sure to be much more political. I say only pick it up if you're a die hard Metro fan, otherwise just save a couple bucks and wait for the next game to release.

A tunnel between stations.

This very short story bridges the canon ending to Metro 2033 and the beginning of Metro: Last Light games brilliantly. As the game and the book diverges slightly in some small details, it doesn't quite fit the gap between the book and the M:LL game as much but it's close enough to allow those who haven't played Metro 2033 to comfortably begin playing M:LL.

I loved it. I really did. A short story that finally brings characterization and insight into Artyom on a level the previous book didn't quite succeed at doing. The structure can feel a little disjointed but to me it added to the feeling that we really were experiencing Artyom's inner turmoil.

Is it worth the price? I'd say so, but many would balk at buying such a short text at this price. It also requires a certain interest in either the original book and the Metro: Last Light game, or the original game and the sequel, either one. As the last ten pages of Metro 2033 gives the reader a punch in the gut and a distinctly Russian hollowness within, this short story succeeds the other way around.

Those who spend their lives staring into the darkness will be the first to recognize the point of light at the end of the tunnel. The end to this story provides that weak yet stirring flicker of hope that really makes me want to continue the story in M:LL.

About the Author
Martha L. Abell and James P. Statistics with Mathematica

Statistics with Mathematica (which I'll refer to as "SwM") is a book for someone who knows something about Mathematica and something about statistics--the more known, the better. SwM is neither a comprehensive tutorial on Mathematica nor on statistics. Rather, SwM illustrates by example how to perform statistical operations and produce graphs using Mathematica. SwM is both a tutorial and a reference book. SwM was written for Version 3 (or later) of Mathematica, although one can purportedly squeak by with Version 2.2.
A word of advice: Before you buy this book, decide whether you have some compelling reason to perform statistical analyses and make graphs using Mathematica, as opposed to, say, Excel.
I found the large number of typos, oversights, and the poor integration of the accompanying CD quite annoying. To the reader familiar with Mathematica, many of the typos are glaring and easy to correct. Other typos, such as incorrect page numbers listed in the index, are more problematic.
Knowledge of Mathematica will also see you through most of the oversights. For example, if you already understand why you must first load a Mathematica Standard Add-on Package before attempting to use one of its functions, you will not need such a reminder in SwM. A reminder is given, but many pages too late.
SwM's preface promises that all Mathematica input is included on the accompanying CD. That is simply not so--some files referred to in the text are not on the CD. However, if you don't mind typing a few missing files, you can make them yourself. The CD, oddly titled "UNTITLED_CD", contains two folders and a total of 60 files. Most files are cryptically named and are not referenced in the text nor vice versa. That's where the fun begins. The SwM text will refer you to an author-defined procedure, tell you to locate it on the CD, but fail to mention the name of the requisite CD file.
A redeeming feature of SwM is the collection of ready-to-use author-defined procedures available to the reader. Some are simple and obvious, while others, such the "Box and Whisker" plotters, would require some effort to write from scratch. The authors' procedures help both by extending the use of Mathematica's add-ons and by illustrating how one might write or modify such procedures.
SwM includes a chapter on data manipulation that illustrates how to transfer data from a text file to Mathematica list variables where the data can be worked upon. SwM, however, does not address how to transfer data from Excel or other commonly used data base applications.
SwM covers a wide gamut of statistical tools including descriptive statistics, univariate and multivariate methods, data smoothing and time series, probability and probability distributions, simulation, inferential procedures, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation, as well as the graphic representation of data and its attributes.
As far as I know, SwM is the only book of its kind that is devoted to statistical analysis via Mathematica. While sloppy editing does leave SwM frustrating to use, the reader could reorganize and index the CD's Notebook files and eventually find SwM to be a favorite reference.

Be forewarned

This book is slightly useful for people who know a little about Mathematica and more about statistics. The book is moderately useful in gaining some idea about how to go about doing statistics with Mathematica.

However, I hope that the editors involved with the publication of this text from Academic Press have all gone back to work at something that does not require eyesight and an ability to read simple words. Others have mentioned the ubiquitous errors. I have never encountered a published final text that is more rife with errors. I've used Mathematica to actually calculate the number of errors in the text (couldn't do it in my head), and the answer is 1.34252x10^14. There are few pages that do not contain at least one error, some, numerous. For example, on page 83 the output of has 6.43041

For a half century or more, black people have labored under the spell of what Jesse Lee Peterson calls the alchemists. These are the race hustlers, media hacks, politicians, community organizers and the like who promise to fundamentally transform America. The transformation they promise, however, produces only fool s gold unearned benefits like welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing, payouts from lawsuits, and maybe one day even reparations. Worse, to secure these counterfeit goods, recipients have to sacrifice something of infinite value: the sanctity of the two-parent family. It is a devil s bargain. To make this experiment work, the alchemists have created an ungodly and unhealthy environment, one in which the white population is made to feel guilty and the black population made to feel angry. The pattern in this is simple: children black or white when deprived of fathers, grow up angry at their parents. White children displace their anger in a thousand different directions. Black children channel theirs, for the most part,�in a single destructive direction towards and against white people. The alchemists encourage them to do this, enable them, and even reward them. This anger fuels the system and pays the alchemists bills. As bleak as this all sounds, an antidote exists, which saved Peterson s life, that of his son, and those of countless young men who have been counseled at Peterson s organization, BOND. The perverse genius of liberalism has been its ability to capture black anger and project it outwards towards anyone, black or white, who resists the Democratic agenda. By encouraging a resentful dependency, liberals have instituted a new kind of slavery in the black community as emotionally shackling as the physical slavery that first brought Africans to America. Peterson knows this story from the inside as few other people do. Born on an Alabama plantation, he was abandoned by his father before he was born. After high school, Peterson moved to Los Angeles and for the next twenty years moved purposelessly through life, channeling his internal anger outwards towards white people and America in general. In the mission he has undertaken since, and in this hopeful book, Peterson shares what he learned on his personal road to Damascus.

The Antidote is an instant classic! This book should be required reading for... let's just say everyone on earth who can read. Jesse Lee Peterson's book explains the madness that is quickly engulfing America and the world, and does so with lucidity and compassion. The Antidote is written by a black man, and deals with pathologies that show up heavily in the black community, but a thoughtful reading will plainly show cause and effect to every human problem. Read this book, ponder this book--it will open your eyes and give you real hope that we as a nation--and the world--can find true solutions to the madness that surrounds us.

Sin and redemption

Jesse writes of his own experience - that of sin and redemption and his own story is moving beyond words. His understanding of the evil that plagues the Black American culture (and now, more and more to the whole American culture) has led to his realization of the cure. The cause of that evil is the lack of real fathers (and the women who hate them for their abandonment) and the cure is returning the men to their roles as fathers and real men. Not fathers full of anger and false "racial" pride but fathers who value character, kindness, firmness, and love and who stay the course - regardless of the challenges in their path. In fact, Jesse shows that challenges are to be met cheerfully and with an attitude of overcoming rather than resentment and avoidance. This is what builds character in men and women.

He writes compassionately of "thuggish" Black men such as OJ Simpson, Tupac Shakur, etc. How they were abandoned by their fathers and left with mothers who had their own problems and didn't have a clue how to really love their sons. Jesse doesn't give anyone a pass, no excuses for their actions - but he shows how abandoned children became warped men. He also writes of those "alchemists" - those race hustlers who encourage this hate and how they have used this rage to incite hatred for American ideals.

Best of all, he offers the "antidote" to that hate - and it starts with each of us as individuals. Here's a hint: Look within to find your real self.

A MUST read for anyone (white or black) that cares about America

This book completely lives up to the very high praise expressed in the forward. Jesse has a credible and compelling life story. Not merely because he is black, but because he personally experienced so much of what he writes about...in different geographies, different periods of time, and with different degrees of mental clarity as he processed life. And while he shares opinions about the what and why of what is going wrong in black and white America, he meticulously backs up his opinions and assertions with facts and evidence. (The negative reviews and press coverage of "Antidote" is sure to come, but I predict the naysayers will be long on name-calling and emotion and short on facts and logic.)

Warning: once you start reading it, this book is tough to put down. My daughter-in-law and I "fought" over it this weekend. She has chosen to teach in one of the poorest, inner-city schools...and is battling the negative consequences daily of exactly what "Antidote" describes. Bringing to the surface with unusual clarity how our country has been subverting the health of black families made us both angry. Whether intentional or not...it is a crime. (Literally...not figuratively.)

Honest people can disagree, but if money and victim status were the solution...the problems would have evaporated years ago. I hope "Antidote" can serve is a wake-up call to our nation that, as the saying goes, "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

This is the most unhelpful textbook I have ever used. Yes, it included all the significant personality theorists and theories, so as far as content goes, it's fine. BUT the explanations were so long-winded and convoluted that I couldn't understand some of the theories at all. I went away thinking I was just an idiot when it came to theories of personality, only to start looking at other textbooks and realize that no, the theories were perfectly within my understanding... when they were adequately explained.

I'm the furthest thing from an electrical engineer, and all of my mechanical engineering talent is with fabric. But I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and felt like I could almost build my own electric bike after reading it. But since I'd much rather build a jacket than a bike, I'll leave the building to the experts like Zero and Brammo. But at least now I know a lot more about how these amazing bikes actually work!

The regents exams are getting easier and easier, so this book is good but pretty useless. But you can't blame them and they did a good job. The vocab section is more than you need on the exam, but it is helpful for the next level course in Spanish, so its not useless. About the Author
A long time fan of dark fantasy with a touch of romance, Maggie Berkley grew up in a world all her own. During long times of parental lock down as a teenager due to a rebellious nature, she wrote short stories and plays and as time went by drew upon her love of fantasy and horror to write fan fiction. Book One of The Morgan Crowe Trilogy begins with the Lead assassin, Moriganna the Morrigu, getting banished from the royal courts for her part in an assassination of a known family. Even though the King decreed her punishment, it was with a heavy heart that he did so. There was a special bond between them, but unfortunately, her actions warranted a stern punishment. So the King exiles her to live her life among humans and away from her home, the Shadowed Lands of the Sidhe.

After centuries of living among humans, she begins getting visits from people from her past warning her not to trust anyone. The King is dead and his power thirsty Queen sits on the throne. Queen Moreithe has always hated Moriganna because of the King's affections for her, so now is the Queen's time to exact her revenge. First she wants to dispose of the leader of the King's assassin group, the Battle Crow, and also the political rivals who don't want her in power. With all the people coming to Moriganna, she has to figure out who is an ally and who is a foe.

While she is filtering through the various admonitions she is receiving, she finds companionship with Malachi. This Were/Shape shifter was sent by the Queen to assassinate her. Instead of killing Moriganna, Malachi warns her of the Queen's plot and even professes to have feelings for her. Before Moriganna knows it, she has fallen in love with the Queen's "pet." Is he really on her side or is this part of the Queen's sinister plans for Moriganna? How will the Morrigu defeat enemies that she isn't aware of?

This book is not a light read, where one can just skim pages. It requires that one pay attention to the characters and details as the author is weaving a plot of treachery vs. loyalty. There were a lot of characters with vague agendas and it was truly hard figuring out Moriganna's side. The author could have done a better job building the world as well as the characters. We know that Moriganna used to be married to and had a child with a philanderer, but not much else. We are told that the Queen is a beautiful, but sadistic person and her children are no better, but why? Why did the King love Moriganna and was it romantic on his part? I suspect that Book Two will have more answers to the past as Morgianna solves the mystery of who killed the King. On thing is for certain, the Morrigu is a force to be reckoned with and I look forward to the next installation of this trilogy as she confronts her enemies.

Morriganna is banished from the realm of the Fae to live among the humans where she continues to work as an assassin. Living amongst the humans, Morgan is biding her time until the Queen dies or her banishment is retracted. Morgan gets drawn back into the world she left behind centuries ago with vague warnings not to trust anyone unfortunately there is more going on in the Fae realm than she is aware of and people are either plotting against her or secretly supporting her - the trouble is she doesn't know who is who!

Enter the Night is a fast paced story full of suspense and intrigue, magic and illusion. After a few chapters I had trouble putting it down, the plot is fast paced and full of so many twists and turns. Just as you think you have sussed out what's going on something happened to change it. Morgan was likeable although a little naive at times considering her age and experience, I'm curious as to what she will be like in the next book without certain influences.

The use of old English for when the Fae where speaking to each other meant the dialogue didn't flow as easily as it may have. I did find it a little distracting but not enough to stop me reading.

I award Enter the Night 4 out of 4 stars.

Using a series of case studies running the gamut from�Kony 2012 to the life and times of Jackass star Bam Margera, Ruddock discusses how and why youth media studies matter, how it should be studied, and what we can learn from the findings. The book covers the influence and effect of media on youth in several contexts; in addition to the examples already mentioned, he covers the Ryan Florence and David Cameron incident, Insane Clown Posse and censorship, the Columbine high school shootings, child soldiers, and much more. The book does provide a good introductory discussion of a variety of key topics in the study of youth and the media, and does an excellent job of revealing the complexity of the relationship between youth and the media.

Throughout his ten chapters Ruddock frames his discussion in a recurring cyclical figure that flows in the following cycle: Research Question, Underlying issue about media influence, Relevant literature, Exemplifying case study, Outcomes, and Lesson for understanding media influence. This consistency in presentation is a strength of the book, adding some structure to a large and varied subject matter. This is a particularly good structure for students, Ruddock’s intended audience...Youth and Media is a good introductory text on the subject and students of media, sociology and violence will find it an excellent place to start. About the Author
Andy Ruddock researches, writes and teaches about media audiences, youth and the politics of popular culture. He is the author of three books: Understanding Audiences, Investigating Audiences and Youth and Media; all 3 titles are with SAGE Publications.

He has been published in several media studies anthologies and scholarly journals, on topics including media violence, political celebrity, school shootings, reality television, alcohol marketing and health campaigning, media sport, mass communication theory and media research methods. Works in progress include pieces on subculture and pornography. He is perhaps best known for his work on cultivation theory.

Educated at Caius College, Cambridge, Penn State University and the University of Massachusetts, where his work was supervised by Michael Morgan, Sut Jhally and Justin Lewis, he has taught at universities in the US, the UK, New Zealand and South Korea. He regularly provides expert commentary on media issues, writing frequently for theconversation.edu.
