About the Author
David J. Peterson was born in Long Beach, California in 1981. He attended UC Berkeley from 1999 to 2003, and received a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Linguistics. He then attended UC San Diego from 2003 to 2006, where he received an M.A. in Linguistics. He's been creating languages since 2000, and working on the HBO original series Game of Thrones since 2009. In 2011, he became the alien language and culture consultant for the Syfy original series Defiance. In 2013, he joined the crew of the CW's Star-Crossed and also Syfy's Dominion as a language creator. In 2007, he helped to found the Language Creation Society, of which David has remained a proud member. He is also the author of The Art of Language Invention, to be published by Penguin Books in 2015.

I gave this to a friend whom speaks numerous languages and he love it! I'm fascinated by how easy it was for him to learn Dothraki and I really enjoy hearing it spoken. Yep! I'm a nerdy geek.

Who doesn't want to speak Dothraki?!

Any big fan of GoT will love this. I purchased this as a gift for myself and have fully enjoyed reading about the Dothraki background, how the language was created, and how to speak it myself. The fact that it includes a matching CD is just too awesome and makes learning that much easier. I took this with me on a very, very long car trip and it definitely made the time go by a lot quicker. I really enjoy this book!!

One hell of a great way to yell at people who offend you. One thing about creating a new language is that people can actually learn to speak it and have it tattoed on them as well as exhange human vocal intonations. What a great book to give to someone who has meaning to you. Very complete biochemistry textbook

What I like the most about this book is that it contains almost all the information that you need to understand biochemistry, information that is not traditionally covered in biochemistry books, but that is needed as background to a complete understanding of the subject. For instance, the first chapter of this book gives background information on the biological, chemical, genetics, evolution basis of biochemistry. It explains the cell in enough detail to understand references made to the cell components later on in the textbook. Another thing I found is a detailed explanation of D and L configuration, as opposed as just saying all amino acids found in proteins are L isomers. No other book I've read explains where the L, D configuration convention came from and students usually confuse it with levorotatory and dextrorotatory, when they are different things altogether. It also has an entire chapter dedicated to water chemistry, which serves as both a review and a basis for understanding the importance of hydrogen bonding in biochemistry in later chapters.

In essence, this is a very COMPLETE book, in the sense that it covers material not found in traditional biochemistry books (ex. Berg, Stryer), but that is necessary to understand other aspects of biochemistry. If you are planning to specialize in the study of biochemistry, you definitely want this book as part of your reference collection.

Short Attention Spans

This Biochemistry textbook is extremely well-written. The figures, tables, and boxes are quite informative, and the problems at the ends of the chapters will challenge you a lot! I really don't know why anyone in the sciences would not like this book. First of all, an incredible amount of data and research went into the making of this book -- so there is A LOT to learn. Second of all, this is a Biochemistry textbook, which means that the material will seem mind-numbing and dry. But since when does "interesting" entail "fun"? No one can be automatically excited by the subject matter; it requires a conscious effort to GET excited, once you get past the mind-numbing part -- exercise your brain!

The only reason I can think of which would turn people away from this book is having a short attention span! The whole point of learning is not to be entertained but to be educated, and this book is the perfect tool for educating. There aren't any goofy cartoon characters or child-like drawings in this book, which may seem why many are turned off by it. But the subject matter is extremely interesting, and if you are willing to learn about the amazing chemical processes within cells, then buy this book! (Learning Glycolysis and the Citric Acid Cycle for the first time will NOT be a fun task -- take my word for it, it's extremely dull -- and no amount of cartoons can make metabolic processes fun. But such processes should be appreciated, regardless of the level of difficulty in learning them.)

Imagery at its finest!

Shutter Step takes me back to a time when a short story from Roald Dahl or Shirley Jackson was just what I needed to transport me to another time and place. This collaboration of authors offers multitudes of fantastic imagery. In short stories, every single word needs to count to pull the reader in.
"The blond swirls ruined as they stuck to my eyes and the cut across my cheek, cemented to my skin with blood." And I Exhale, by Stephanie Pitcher Fishman.
"Marguerite, only rags, some stained a deep umber like the crust of a pie long since forgotten in a hot oven, stared back." Shaded, Dede Nesbitt.
I highly recommend this anthology of shorts. The stories are refreshing and absorbing giving the reader just enough.

About the Author
Luba Freedman is Professor in the Department of the History of Art at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The dogmatic title of this book is enough to raise the hackles of any music lover. That's unfortunate, because this is a well-designed primer on music for the intelligent but uninformed listener of any age. At 63, Goulding, a Washington newspaper journalist who moved to high government and business posts in defense and oil, attempted to learn something about classical music. Amazingly, he found no helpful sources for the adult absolute beginner. Ten years later, he presents this book for those in the same quandary. The user-friendly format features charts, pictures, and sidebars, simple explanations of musical terms, and descriptions of instruments. The writing flows easily, and the text is readable and browsable. There is nothing new here, but Goulding has done his homework carefully and thoroughly. Recommended for the curious but illiterate music lover.

Fantastic Intro to Classical Music

A book for newcomers to Classical music, it acquaints you with the subject in several valuable ways. First, the different periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century) are defined and broken down. Then, significant artists of every period are defined. Then, the top 50 composers are listed, in order, beginning with Mr. Bach. Each of the 50 artists are then given a biographical sketch, an overview of their life's work, and their most significant works are highlighted. A Collecters Starter Kit follows for each of the 50, containing 5 works that provide good representation of their careers. Obviously, 5 works may seem laughable when considering Mozart, and may seem too much when considering Bizet, so expanded lists of works follow for those composers with a large body of work.
Goulding treats this book as a research effort, but his personal views do come through at times (He makes it very clear that Georg Telemann and Antonio Vivaldi would NOT be among his top 50, but remain on list because they are historically important composers. In fact, in the description of Telemann you are greatly encouraged to substitute Sergei Rachmaninoff).
The book ends with suggested recordings of each Starter Kit selection. This is very valuable reading prior to taking your next trip to the record store. Whether or not you choose to buy the recommended recordings, this section of the book gives you a good idea of who are the Great conductors and Orchestras, and picking a CD is easier when names like Solti, Karajan, Rubenstein, and Ashkenazy are names familiar to you.

Gets you started--then you can make up your own mind!

This book makes an excellent addition to the library of any budding classical music aficionado. It is informative and presented in a clear format that gives the reader a foundation for musical exploration as well as logical direction.
Much of the early chapters ("The Organization of Sound," "Setting the Stage") is written for the rank beginner. I found myself skimming these chapters, as will most readers who already know the differences between melody and harmony, strings and woodwinds, baroque and romantic. A beginner will find it helpful while not dry, and it's well-organized for later reference.
The bulk of the book is then given to a discussion of "The 50 Greatest Composers and Their 1,000 Greatest Works." Goulding gives a nutshell biography, with some colorful sidebars, that gives a good overview of the composers' lives, times, influences, strengths, and weaknesses.
After the bio is the most valuable part of the book--the greatest works of that composer. Goulding presents a "Starter Kit," a "Top Ten," and a "Master Collection" for each of the 50 composers. This allows a classical music newcomer to get the breadth of composers and the depth of a composer that appeals to them. That's what makes this book one that will be a long-time reference work rather than a one-off "beginners only" guide.
Most "composer's guides" seem to favor an egalitarian, arbitrary ordering--alphabetical, chronological--rather than passing judgment about the composer's worth. (I guess it's fortunate for the music beginner that one encounters Bach and Beethoven early on in either an alphabetical or chronological ordering!) I find that Goulding's rankings give direction to exploring classical music. By the time the reader is through the top 10 or top 20 in the list they've gotten to know the majority of the most important composers and their most important works.
It's easy to quibble with individual rankings--for example, I would place Sibelius (ah, his wonderful Third Symphony!) higher than #28, and there's no way you could convince me that Wagner is a better composer than Haydn or Schubert--but hard to say with a straight face that a beginner should learn Hindemith before Strauss, or Verdi before Bach.
Ultimately, there's no ranking that matters, other than one's own. Even that's a difficult proposition. Do I like Bach or Beethoven better? Darned if I know--they both "do it" for me, and (to quote Forrest Gump) that's all I've got to say about that.
My fault with the book is that Goulding's Chapter I amounts to an unnecessary justification of his ranking system, rather than diving into musical "required knowledge" and then discussing composers after laying the groundwork. Just note all the reviews more concerned with presentation (i.e., the ranking system) rather than content!
He also wastes some ink on some contrived statistics based on his rankings--ranks by nationality, century of birth, etc.--that don't do much of anything that someone who cared about that sort of thing couldn't do for themselves in an Excel spreadsheet in a half hour.
Buy this guidebook for its clear direction on where to start listening and how to broaden and deepen one's knowledge, take Goulding's opinions with a grain of salt, and acquire enough experience to form your own opinions.

very helpful for beginners!

I knew next to nothing about classical music, but wanted to add some to my music collection. Browsing through the classical section in stores got overwhelming in a hurry. This book helped me a great deal to narrow down what CDs to look for. It's easy to read and understand, includes bios of the 50 most popular/important composers and which of their works are the most well-known, popular, or historically important. Also some suggestions on CDs to buy for various works. You don't need to read the chapters on musical history or instruments, but they are interesting and informative.
This same author has a similar book on opera, too. I'm not as interested in building a collection of opera, but I plan on buying the book just to read and educate myself a little more on opera.
Highly recommended as an easy introduction to classical music, or if you're looking to build or expand your classical libary.

About the Author
Charles Barnitz is an accomplished author who has published stories in The Denver Quarterly and The Madison Review and had a chapter of his novel, Mummers, anthologized in the Signet Classic Book of Contemporary American Short Stories. Many of his stories follow Hring, an 8th-c. former monk, now serving as an assistant advocate in the gem�t courts of the Mercian province of Elmet. He is out to see balance restored, even if it takes a little creative interpretation of the law to bring the guilty men to the rope.

Great book, is a good example of a rare gem

I ran across this book during one of those times when you just do not know what you want to read. Sort of like a burn out on fantasy which is my favorite reading.
This is one of those books that you can read, then a few months later blow the dust off and read again. I have read it 3 times now and am just amazed at this writers ability to keep me interested. From the first page to the finale it is wonderful and rich story telling. I do not think he has any other work out there, which is a shame because with this style of writing I could easily call him my favorite writer.
To give away too much of the story in this review would not do the next reader any justice, so you will just have to try it out for yourself. The humor and setting are the best I have ever read. I can give this 5 stars without even considering any other rating, highly recommend it for anyone looking for a book to keep you up into the wee hours of them morning.

Anachronistically delightful

If you've ever sat by a bonfire, tankard in hand, and listened to Some "Snori-whats-his-father type" regale you with a NO-*hit!- there I was story; you'll recognize the delightfully anachronistic tone of The Deepest Sea. If you haven't perhaps you should; or at least read this book. The Deepest Sea is a fun a-viking romp, written by someone who obviously bothered to crack a book or two on the subject. Barnitz succeeds in giving you a feel for the period with-out falling back on creating psuedo-Nordic speech patterns in his narrative. One feels the protagonist may have simply lived long enough to tell his tale to modern audiences in their own tongue. I think this is a great approach and WOULD BE PLEASED TO FIND IT AGAIN. (Are you listening Charles Barnitz?) The story is Laugh-out-loud entertaining. Which for me, excuses the "NOT PERIOD!" elements. I'll take potatoes in the wrong place and time, for the "Three wishes" joke any day. To sum it up, I was much too busy enjoying this book to care much about any literary, historical, or grammatical flaws. Purist be Dashed! The Deepest Sea is a good story, well told, in a fun and original style! Write some more Barnitz, any subject, I'll read'em! D Ambruso

GREAT STORY

Very original, highly entertaining, hilariously funny in a couple of places, with a bittersweet twist at the end.
This is an adult oriented novel about a young man growing up in early Nordic society. It touches on adventure, politics, friendship, spirituality and human nature.
The editing could have been better, but it's still a great read.
I wish there were a sequel.
