Bakker is undoubtedly the controversial and exciting dinosaurologist of the day. His ideas of active, behaviorly complex, warm-blooded dinosaurs have shaken orthodox views and stimulated both public interest and renewed scientific research. In this book he reviews many of his well-known ideas about dinosaur physiology, feeding habits, running ability, taxonomy, and extinction, and offers tidbits on more minor details, e.g., whether dinosaurs had a gizzard. He writes in a colorful, even impassioned prose more akin to political rhetoric than analytic science. While this book lacks the breadth and balanced objectivity of David Norman's excellent The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs (Crescent Bks., 1985), it is nevertheless important and revolutionary. Fantastic popular science

Dinosaur Heresies is everything a popular science title should be. This book is a free-wheeling, thought-provoking, incredibly fun jaunt through the range of controversies and rethinkings paleontology has seen in the past twenty years or so.
Robert Bakker, first of all, is probably the best popular science writer I've ever come across. His voice is accessible, full of humor and character, and he writes a lean, sharply-turned argument that's easy and fun to follow without being at all pedantic. You don't think, at all, about the welter of disparate arguments Bakker's making in this book, because he just tells them so darn well, he really does. This book is pure delight for anyone with even a passing interest in dinosaurs.
I will mention, again, that this is a pop science title. It's a summary of the sorts of things that show up in academic articles, and a broad, idea-spinning take on those issues and problems. If, reading some other reviews here, you get the impression Robert Bakker singlehandedly rethought the whole cold-bloodedness thing, well, don't get too carried away. Pop science books don't do that work. Peer-review journals are where the evidence lives, in science, and books like Dinosaur Heresies get the word out to you and me.
I would recommend this as a gift to give anyone twelve or older who has an interest in Dinosaurs. Later on someone may be enthused enough to try Jack Horner, who's slightly less accessible in my experience, and closer to the journal writers than Heresies is. Then, too, reading this book might throw you in all sorts of other directions. (I personally became really excited about prehistoric mammals.) I hate to be hackneyed, but that's what a dazzlingly good popular science book will do; it'll broaden your world and make you remember what curiosity is good for. Dinosaur Heresies does that, in spades. You'll reread it.

The best dinosaur book ever written.

I've been reading dinosaur books ever since I was a little boy in the 1970s. I remember being fascinated at these creatures that the then "conventional wisdom" said were bulky, obese, overweight, dumb, slow witted, slow moving, cold blooded swamp dwellers. Ha! Our knowledge of dinosaurs sure has come far since then. In this book, Bakker presents a tremendous amount of evidence to challenge many of the popular ideas about dinosaurs. Bakker uses evidence in the fossil record to argue that dinosaurs were warm blooded, active creatures who lived in groups, and migrated, and raised their young, and were capable of running at rather rapid speeds, and who did not live in swamps. Actually, many of these ideas had been proposed during the 19th century, only to be swept under the rug. Bakker revives many of these ideas, as well as coming up with many original ideas of his own. This is an excellent book.

Brilliant.

Bakker's heresies, revolutionary as they were in the 70's, are accepted science now. Every other fossil emerging out of China seems to have more feathers and is more birdlike than the one before it, which is testament to his original theories. What used to be radical is now the standard. But I still like to read The Dinosaur Heresies every so often just because it's such a pleasure to read.

Bakker is that exceedingly rare specimen: a brilliant and original-minded scientist who writes beautifully. The Dinosaur Heresies is conversational, accessible, even (horrors!) humorous in parts, and, ultimately, convincing. Bakker weaves together paleontology, the history of science, and his own methodology to create a book that is both enlightening and entertaining. It's a joy to read, and lavishly illustrated--by the author himself. Is there anything this guy can't do?

The real value of the book, now that Bakker's original heresies--the dinosaurs were warm-blooded, smart, fast, and the most successful chapter in the history of life, and oh, they're still around, but we call them birds today--have been vindicated is to watch a first-class mind assess the evidence and arrive at the proper conclusions, and then explain, readably and entertainingly, how he got there. It's a little like reading Sherlock Holmes, only with dinosaurs.

Thirty years down the pike, no one has yet done it better than Dr. Bakker. His book is a classic of popular science, and ought to be required reading for every high school student in the country.

About the Author
John R. Fanchi is a Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He has worked in the technology centers of three major oil companies (Marathon, Cities Service and Getty), and served as an international consultant. He has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Houston.

Awesome diagrams, easy to use.

I saw this book at Barnes and Noble and after flipping through it for 30 minutes, decided that I had to have it. I ended up ordering it from Amazon.com to save some money, and I haven't been disappointed. This book is full of large, beautiful images. On the adjacent page to the image, there is a diagram for the lighting setup used to get the overall feel of the portrait.
This book is easy to use and makes great use of page space with image samples instead of wordy text. The author takes to heart the learning style of "show" rather than "tell". I will be turning to this book a lot as it's a definite keeper.

Well worth it

This is an amazingly good book for the price.

This is a real classy book, big and hefty, the production quality is great, it's full of great photos that will inspire you and it gives examples from the work of the two authors across a huge spectrum of photography: portraits, advertising, editorial, group shots, reportage, beauty....and on and on. Each photo has a diagram of the set up, showing what lights were used, camera equipment and settings and useful tips to go with each style of shot. Most of the book is full of celebrity shots taken on assignment,so it's a real life book showing what it's like to work on time limits and use all your equipment to get the most out of each shot.

In addition, the book gives shooting tips for outdoors and in the studio, what equipment to use and even some photo shop tutorials.

This book is definitely aimed at intermediate level photographers, it does assume you already have knowledge so I can't recommend it to beginners, but if you know about lighting and want to raise your game this is a great book for you.

I received this book as a gift from a family member over the holidays, and have already run through it several times.

Definitely not a beginners book - and i'm glad of that, as every lighting book I seem to buy has several chapters on "why you should take your flash off camera" - when this book has already assume you know how to use your gear (and you have gear to use) - and instead is showing you how to make best use of that gear.

The majority of the book is devoted to full color portraits from several photographers portfolios, covering celebrities and models, to families and babies - on one side of the bi-fold, there is a full color portrait, on the other a break down of how it was lit, the challenges the photographer faced and how he overcame them - excellent, working knowledge.

The last part of the book is more focussed to business operations, and I found that much less useful than the "show and tell"

This will be something I'll use repeatedly in the future - I can see showing this to clients and letting them get inspiration from the different lighting techniques that are clearly shown, and using it as a jumping off point for photoshoots.

If you're already comfortable with using your flash units or strobes, but are looking for inspiration on styles and techniques, this is a great tool.

Applies analytical model to six "military failures"

Military historians will enjoy this book. I read it as part of the Air War College curriculum. The theme of the book is that often military blunders are the result of or enhanced by institutional/organizational flaws. The first couple of chapters lay out an analytical model that is used in the remainder of the book. The model combines in-depth knowledge of the campaign with a tailored, layered critical approach for each campaign. In the remaining chapters the model is applied to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Yom Kippur War 1973, the US anti-sub effort in 1942, the Brits' Sulva Bay enterprise at Gallipoli 1915, the US retreat from the Yalu River in Korea 1950, and the collapse of the French Army & Air Force in 1940. The six campaigns are very readable and enjoyable. The style is crisp and succint. I learned alot of interesting details about the campaigns. The Gooch & Cohen model is not a tool for prediction of the success of future campaigns - only for historical analysis. Nonetheless, once you get through the first two chapters, you'll be in for an enjoyable read. Try it.

While this book deals with military failures, the paralels to running a business or a family are rich and rewarding. One example: The story of the US failure in Korea, and how certain branches of the armed forces prevailed but other failed was fascinating ... we tend to think of events as successes or failures, but really they are combinations of successes and failures -- studying in a granular, detailed way illuminates both and allows one to succeed overall by cutting failing tactics and replacing them with successful ones. Many other rich paralels here too.

About the Author
Fred Taylor is Halley Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford. He is a senior figure in the planetary science community, and has been involved in NASA and ESA missions to study Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. He is also a prolific author - in addition to his Mars book, he has written The Cambridge Photographic Guide to the Planets (2001) and the textbooks Elementary Climate Physics (2005) and Planetary Atmospheres (2010), and he has co-authored five other books. His lead roles in the Pioneer Venus and Venus Express missions give him a unique and authoritative perspective of this area. He is the recipient of numerous awards including thirteen NASA Achievement Awards; The Bates Medal of the European Geophysical Society, for Excellence in the Planetary Sciences; and The Arthur C. Clarke Lifetime Achievement Award.

About the Author

Rudy Flora, LCSW, ACSW, CSOTP, has worked with children, adolescents, and adults with sexual disorders for more than�thirty years. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider. He holds the ACSW by the Academy of Certified Social Workers. Flora is in private practice and is an adjunct faculty member with Radford University. He is a former probation officer. Flora is the author and co-author of two clinical books on sex offenders.

Michael L. Keohane, LCSW, CSOTP, CPRP, has worked with adults with mental illness and adult sex offenders for over twelve years. He currently serves as the Department Director of Adult Recovery Services for Highlands Community Services, is employed in practice with Flora Counseling Services, and is an adjunct faculty at Virginia Highlands Community College.

A Focus on Clinical and Bureaucratic Matters

If you're a bureaucrat working with sex offenders this book will appeal to you. It gives a broad overview of the legal and clinical issues with lots of lists and bullet points. If you're more interested in the inter-personal dynamics of working with sex offenders or understanding what really motivates and drives them in their specific behaviors, then this book is not for you.
I found the book curiously lacking and somewhat out of date, even though it was published in 2001. For example, there is no mention of online activities, like pornography and chat rooms, and how those are fueling the addictive cycles of the users and perhaps contributing to other behaviors that more directly affect people in physical ways. Indeed, there is only one small section at the end of the book on the subject of sex addiction. What about the victimizing of children in online porn? What about the use of chat rooms to lure adolescent girls and boys into face to face meetings? What about the increasing use of hidden digital cameras for voyeuristic activities? These, and others, are the new frontier in offending, so to speak.
The author is in private practice but his previous years as a probation officer illuminate his approach to the subject. Although he includes a six page section on women offenders, Flora's view of sex offenders is definitely a male view, and he seems to view them overwhelmingly as heterosexual males abusing women and children. Exhibitionists and voyeurs seem to be males, for example.
I found the author's omission of a discussion of cultural background and racial propensities in offending notable, especially given his Hispanic surname. Also, missing was any significant mention of sexual orientation issues.
Overall, I found this book disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic, so I'll give it a somewhat neutral three stars rating.

An Important Go To Manual For Professionals and Students Alike.

How To Work With Sex Offenders is comprehensive manual designed for professionals working in sex offender treatment, mental health, human services, and the criminal justice system. The book covers a wide range of topics, from matters concerning mental health issues and the dynamics of sexual offending to the impact on victims to the inner workings of the justice system itself. Updated information concerning the role of the internet in sexual offending and sex addiction has been included, as well as the dynamics of such technology in regards to criminal prosecution and probation.

The contents of the publication begin with a basic introduction regarding the definition of the sex offender. This chapter covers both a national and international perspective on sexual offending, including definitions of sexual offending from gathered academic resources. U.S. social policy is covered, as well as the laws concerning U.S. federal registration requirements. Various aspects of the involvement of the criminal justice system are included as well. Chapters 2 and 3 continue with the dynamics of criminal justice, the elements of law enforcement, investigation, interviewing of the victim, evaluations, prosecution, and the correction system.
Chapters 4 and 5 place concentration of the role of professionals in human services and mental health. These two chapters cover a wide range of discussions, from resources such as child advocacy centers to topics including confidentiality, therapist qualifications, and abuse statistics. Gender issues, defense mechanisms, and the role of children in sexual abuse also included as topics in Chapters 4 and 5. More information regarding children as victims is included in Chapter 11 while Chapter 12 provides covers children and adolescents that display sexual acting out behaviors. Chapter 10 provides a specific amount of focus on female sex offenders.
Chapter 6 deals with various paraphilias while Chapter 7 focuses upon the characteristics of the sex offender. Chapter 8 handles topics concerning sexual offending and the internet while Chapter 9 covers sexual addiction. Therapy methods and options are discussed in Chapters 13, 14, and 15. Several appendices are included at the back of the book, including suggestions for evidence collection kits, victim interview questions, sexual history gathering, guidelines for interviewing suspects, and possible questions for prosecutors.
This book holds considerable value in the manner that it is written. Authors Rudy Flora and Michael L. Keohane have presented the contents in a manner that is adequately detailed yet to the point. The text is composed in an easy to read fashion that often breaks down the information in common layman's terms, relying on inside field terminology only when necessary. The information is also presented in a method that contains the informative, need to know details without being too wordy. After receiving this book I spent a number of evenings after work reading through the chapters. Despite having quite a few stressful days at the office, I noted that I was able to dedicate myself to the topics without becoming tired or bored with the details. That said, How To Work With Sex Offenders has dual value as a college textbook and as an important field guide for a sex offender treatment provider. While seasoned veterans in the field will find the information less useful, the contents of this publication offers a valuable resource for therapists and providers with less experience. Having some experience in the sex offender treatment field my own self, this book holds definite merit as a quick hands on field guide. This is especially true for a less experienced or newly employed professional that is trying to learn the complexities surrounding sex offenders.

Excellent resource!

As a beginning substance abuse therapist I have limited experience with sex offenders. This particular book has provided a wealth of information on sex offenders and sex addiction. Suggestions for therapeutic methods that can be used with these offenders was extremely helpful. The information contained on sex addiction has been invaluable as this diagnosis has recently begun to appear in my client population. Overall this is an excellent reference for therapists of any level.
